controlling volume of different timbres in combis

Just got an X50. I wanted a lightweight all purpose synth for day to day rehearsals, and the X50 fits the bill nicely.
Read the manual and have looked through older posts but still can't answer this.
I want to set up a combi and have the B Knobs control volumes of different timbres. It seems like whatever I try, one knob always changes the volume of all timbres that have a volume knob assigned to it.
Steps I followed:
1) I enable each B knob for only one timbre and disable it for the others. Thus, each knob should affect only one timbre.
2) I assign CC #7 to each knob.
Seems to me that should do it, but every timbre is affected when I turn any volume knob.
I see in the manual there is a "hold balance" (if I'm remembering the term correctly) function, which seems like a likely culprit, except that I can't even find that function. (as an aside, I might use it in some circumstances if I could find it! It doesn't come up on any utility menu, as the manual says it should.) Moreover, I would think the default is "off," so if I haven't enabled it, it shouldn't be in play.
Thanks for any help.
