First you need to install the midi-USB installer. When you have plugged the R3 to your computer, open the ableton, see Midi window in preferences and set your own options.

Ok, so i have installed the midi-USB installer, connected the R3 and opened ableton and opened the midi pref window. Now what do i do? The R3 is not in the list of selectable control surfaces so i how do i get ableton to recognise that i want to use the R3 as a controller?

surface control: NONE
INPUT: R3 KBD/KNOB
OUTPUT: R3 sound
Midi ports:
INPUT: R3KBD/KNOB -->YES/YES/YES
OUTPUT: R3SOUND -->YES/YES/YES
If you haven't got this options you have not installed the midi driver o no sound drivers are activated.
Good luck

Thanks for your helpful reply.
However, as could have been predicted, i don't have any of those options. I can't understand why though, i have the definitely installed the drivers. Is it perhaps because i should have the R3 connected purely via USB? Currently i have a Midi-USB connection between the R3 and my mac - i thought this was logical since i want to use it as a midi controller? But hey, i'm new to this so don't really know.
I also have an M-Audio soundcard connected to the mac via firewire.
Any further help greatly appreciated.

I've been using my R3 in Live with the help of these instructions but yesterday came to use it and it had disappeared in the ableton midi sync preferences tab. Well, not strictly true, it was 'pinked' out and i couldn't select it.
Now, i know an obvious thing to try is re-booting Live but i'm running a demo and cannot save my project so i'd really like to fix this without losing my work. Also, if i tried re-booting and it didn't work i'd be so annoyed at losing the project unnecessarily.
Any suggestions?

Have you change the USB connection to another port?
You must install the midi driver in each USB port you connect the R3, or always plug it in the same place.
Good luck.

Yes... very important to know... that every devices with usb conection should always be connected to the same usb port! It's not a harddrive where you can put it anywhere...
