not on its own. it can only play two different sounds at once, at the most. so the drums and the bass for example. although drums are difficult to achieve.

or layer up tracks in a recording program e.g. Cubase, Ableton Live!, Sonar, Logic, Garrageband, etc...

You can't layer any tracks on the R3 because it doesn't have a multitrack sequencer. You can use the R3 to lay down as many tracks or loops as you want on a multitrack DAW or looper, one or two tracks at a time. The R3 can have two timbres playing at a time, triggered by the arpegiator and/or mod sequencer, so it can do more than one sound at a time, up to a maximum limit of 8 polyphony. Since there was no evidence that the video was done live, it could've been layered with anything.

If I want to achieve, say, something like this, will the R3 + a DAW (software) do? Or do I have to purchase a controller like the nanoKONTROL, which is being used in the video?

I'm guessing that if I go with the R3 + DAW combo, I'd have to control the volumes and such in the DAW's mixer directly?

BTW, the only DAW I have experience on is FL Studio. Well, it's the only one I have anyway. Can it be done?

Sure, the R3 and Ableton Live will do that alone, but having a controller makes it much easer to do live. And a nanoKontrol is cheap. You could do the same thing with a padKontrol or any number of lighted pad controllers. Noticed how he faded multiple tracks out, that's much easier to do when you've got multiple faders like on the nanoKontrol or APC40. The APC40 was designed for Ableton Live, so that's very good for quick live looping compared to mousing around on a screen.

You'll also need a sound card or some sort of audio capture device to, well, capture the R3's audio output as audio tracks in your DAW. My suggestions: MOTU Ultralite, Digidesign Mbox 2 (comes with a version of Pro-Tools) or Edirol FA-66.

Those videos are made so that each track is a separate recorded audio track inside a DAW.
