R3 Midi problem

trying to hook ym r3 upto my emx but have it so they both run at the same tempo but so i can still use the arppegiator on the R3 HELP!

go to the MIDI page on the R3 and switch MIDI Clock to 'external MIDI'

ive tried that but then the arrpegiator on the r3 no longer functions
