I am trying to figure out the best practical way to control my sound live when on stage. I don't like going through the house PA because sometimes you never know how it will sound or if the person controling the PA knows what they are doing.. they also control your overall volume.
Ive seen people going through a Bass or Keyboard amp.
Which is better? Any particular amps that sound best?
Any tips/advice would be helpful.

None of the above. Get your own active PA speakers. You can put them on the floor - it's allowed. What is your budget?

How big is the venue? What kind of music? Those answers will help determine how much speaker you need.

If you want to handle a wide range of small to medium sized venues, both outdoor and indoor, then you'll need to get quality, powerful active speakers. If you buy right once, then you don't need to buy twice or more. I'd suggest a single QSC K12 for $800 with aluminum pole mount. Then get a second when you can afford it. The K12 has a good bass enhancement mode that can serve you for awhile until you can afford a good active sub. They sound great and are very loud for their weight, which are very nice to haul around. It has a 6 year ext. warrantee with registration, so these are tools of the trade that you can depend on for a while. Take a listen to the K12 to see for yourself.

Ive heard good things about Mackie speakers.

I run mine through a set of Mackies and have gotten great results. I'd definitely recommend them as well.
