I'm looking into getting the EMX-1, I have some questions first though

Is it possible to play for 3 mins or so, and have the device record what you are playing? So you could play it back afterwards?
For example, any beat changes and oscillators.

Does the device use onboard memory/a memory card?

Is it easy to switch from a heavy beat structure to something simple and plain?

Anybody use the device with a KP3 to use samples at the same time?

You can easily create several patterns that have different sounds, and string the patterns together in song mode. The knob twists that you'd use for filter sweeps, effects changes, etc. can be recorded to each pattern and/or the song. You can have I think 256 patterns per song, and since each pattern can be up to 8 measures long, time will probably never be an issue.

The EMX uses SmartMedia cards, which are available online.

Switching one beat structure to another: It's absolutely possible, but if you switch between patterns that employ dramatically different effects (delays, distortion, etc.) you're likely to get some artifacts at the switchover point. Not a problem if you plan ahead.

I use my EMX and KP3 together all the time and they work very well with one another for short stretches. As you'll gather if you read elsewhere in these forums, there are MIDI clock issues with the KP3 that make it difficult to stay in sync with other devices for long periods of time (more than a couple of minutes, I find). As long as you don't plan to have a KP3 sample looping continuously over your beats for longer than that, you should be OK.
