New to M50 and need help
My husband recently bought our daughter a M50 and we really need some help. We are very new to this whole world and know very little. Our daughter has recorded a song on her M50 and we managed to get it onto a San Disk. When we put the San Disk into her laptop there is no way to open the file and play it because the Windows Media Player won't open the .sng file. Our goal is to put the song onto a CD that others can easily open and play without having to have any special software. Can someone help us please? My daughter wants to enter the song in a contest and our deadline is coming fast. Thanks.

I'm new to this, too, but I can tell you this much: you can't play the .sng file on anything but the Korg. The only way to get a recording of the song is to connect the output on the back of the keyboard to the line input (NOT the mic input) of your computer and record it with a sound recording program (such as Audacity, which is freeware).
The easiest way to get the sound out is through the headphone socket, with an adapter cord (minimum length of 6 feet) that has a 1/4" stereo plug on one end (for the headphone jack) and a 1/8" stereo plug on the other end (for the sound card). You can buy one at any Radio Shack, Best Buy or music instrument store in the audio equipment department. The keyboard's output level to the headphone circuit is adjustable via the volume slider on the front panel.

yes.
M50 differently from M3 cannot save directly .wav file but only MIDI or .sng (korg proprietary format) files.
well if you think you're daughter is going to record more and more her songs from M50 to pc you can also think about buying a USB or firewire audio interface so that you can connect M50 to the audio interface using standard 1/4" TS jack and audio interface to pc via usb. this will ensure a higher quality and often the audio interface have in bundle audio recording program as Cubase or similar to be used for multi-track recording and audio editing.

You can also save what's in the sequencer to Standard MIDI (.mid) files, that should be easier to play on your PC, but...
For distributing to others you better record the audio from the M50 to get the exactly right sounds, because...
.sng and .mid files only contain the events (note on/off, pitch bend etc) etc and not the sounds, so even if you can play .mid files on your PC they will very likely (read: absolutely definitely) not sound like the M50.

After making a sequenece on M-50 if you want to play file directly from SD card once it is saved, you need to save it as "Save As Standard MIDI File" but it has a big drawback. Once you save the file as .smf it automatically picks up General MIDI sound. If the sound selected on a track is other than GM Bank it will automatically pick up GM sound with PC message.

Recording the easy way.
Hi, mojofilter is right. The easiest way is to use a free software like "Audacity" to record the songs directly from the M50 to the PC. "Audacity is very easy to use.
http://download.cnet.com/Audacity/3000- ... 58117.html
or: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/?lang=en
When the song is recorded you can change it to a .mp3 file and burn it on a CD or DVD but as you'll read in "Audacity" you'll have to download a .dll file called (lame_enc.dll) Audacity LAME MP3 Encoder and place it in the "Audacity" directory.
1. Download "Audacity" from the above link.
2. Download the .dll file and place it "Audacity" directory.

Hope it helps.

Thank you, Run. I need to point out that it is neither necessary nor desirable to turn the sound file into an mp3 before putting it on a CD. CDs should be made from unadulterated .wav files. Then you can convert the file to whatever lossy format you wish and put it on your portable music player, mail it to people or host it on a website. But please, for the love of all that is right and good, do not convert the file to mp3 before you save it on a CD, because you'll never get that resolution back that is lost in the encoding process.
Let me just add that on Windows computers, there is software built-in that will record a sound directly to .wav files. If you connect the M50's outputs (L and R) to the line inputs on your sound card, you can then use Windows sound recorder to create a wave file.
The sound recorder can be found in
Start|All Programs|Accessories|Entertainment|Sound Recorder
It's very simply to use .. Click the help button for info .. Basically, you click 'New' and then click the record button.
There's plenty of freeware out there to do the same sort of thing, and frequently better ... but for quick and easy, it's hard to beat this built-in application.

Man .. I had no idea. That DOES suck. However, there's a workaround from microsoft here .. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/82215evildragon wrote:Windows Sound Recorder is LIMITED TO ONE MINUTE of recording.
Sucks.
There's a ton of freeware out there that will record as long as you want. Sorry for the bad tip ..

Just PM in order to send the PCG and SEQ files and let me know in which format do you need it. Also, let me know when is your deadline.
