I recently purchased the M50 (88 key) and have been studying intensely the encyclopedia that came with it. I have noticed that when in the COMBI Mode, only a few of the timbres work for each program. When I Mute the "active" timbres and try to play other timbres in the program, nothing happens. Should not I be able to change timbres to produce a different combination of sounds? What is the point of having 16 timbres if only 4-7 of them work at all? What am I doing wrong? Can someone direct me to a page in the manual addressing this problem? Thanks for any suggestions!

Those "other timbres" are probably set to work only in certain keyrange or velocity range.

How would I change the keyrange/velocity parameters to allow for the other timbres? And are all the other non-working timbres for all the other COMBI programs set in a similar fashion? For example, the "M50 Grand Piano" will take 8-10 of the timbre positions per COMBI Program. Would all of these be set to the same key range/velocity range, prohibiting any other sound from that timbre? I was hoping all I would have to do is select a different instrument for that particular timbre and it would work just fine...

Also check the output channel. When I started doing combis (and I've only had the M50-73 for two weeks, now), I only heard the first sound until I realized that you need to set the output to the global channel (Gch) or they don't sound for you.

"M50 Grand Piano" is the default program assigned to unused timbres on any Combi. In order to change this, on P0: Play, you need to change the unused parameter from "mute" to "play," and then you can select which program you want in that location.

As for keyzones and velocity parameters on a Combi, these can be changed on P4: Zone/Delay (in order to change "pages," hit the "page select" button just beneath the data wheel); once you select this page, then you need to select the tabs at the bottom of the page (key zone 1-8, key zone 9-16, velocity 1-8, velocity 9-16, etc.).

That should do the trick. If you still can't hear programs that you think you should be hearing, let us know...

The only track that sounds if you assign a different MIDI channel is the drum track. (If you select the same MIDI channel on the Drum track page, of course)

By default, all tracks in a blank combi are assigned to the MIDI channels: Track 1 to 01G,
Track 2 to 02,
Track 3 to 03 and so on and so forth.
