Using Korg M3 as a computer MIDI controller

Hi everyone,
Please excuse the stupidity of my questions, but I am new to using VST's and computer recording. I am trying to set up my Korg M3 to act as a controller to play samples on my computer. I recently acquired Kontakt and plugged my usb from my Korg M3 directly into my computer, thinking that Kontakt would recognize it and allow me to play the samples. I could not get it to work. On Kontakt, I checked to see if there was a device for the M3 and it was blank - nothing.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I don't have a MIDI interface, but didn't think I needed one since I always thought that MIDI can be sent through a USB cable. I have installed the M3 driver.

Please walk me through this if you don't mind and remember, I have never used a keyboard through a computer before. ;)
thanks so much,
Dave

You don't need a MIDI cable, but you do need to install the Korg drivers. This is a two-step process (unlike most other devices) - first you install the software that you'll download from Korg's website. Then you plug in the M3, run some kind of setup program that you'll have already installed from Korg, and choose to activate the M3. Do this without having Kontakt running. Then, start up Kontakt and go back to the MIDI settings, and it should detect the M3.

Cool. I'm not sure what the setup program is that your talking about, but I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight. Thanks!

it should be under Start > Programs > KORG, called 'Install USB MIDI Device' or similar.
