ESX Workflow Question

OK, I admit it. This is another ESX or EMX post but hopefully with a difference.
I'm buying my first Electribe. I have no experience of creating music but what I do know is that I want to be twiddling knobs and pushing buttons; I don't want to be sat in front of a computer.
Ultimately, I want a sampler and a synth. I see myself some day having something similar to one of the following two setups:
1. Electribe ESX and something like a DSI Evolver. Here's why.
2. Electribe ESX and Electribe EMX.
So on the surface of it, it looks like an ESX is a safe first buy for me.
Here's my concern. I have no idea what the ESX workflow is away from the ESX itself. How do you source samples? Do you buy them on CD/DVD? If so, from where? Do you download them? If so, from where? Do you create them yourself. If so, what software do you use? Do I need to worry about sample formats? If so, what software do I need to perform the conversion? I'd hate to buy the ESX and then find I was spending my few precious hours of free time sat at my computer sourcing, creating and converting samples and hating it when I could be creating music.
I'd really appreciate your help.
