Yeah, I bought a midi male to male cable to hook up my korg r3 to the m audio fast track pro to record into ableton live, however there is no sound. Is this because I bought the wrong cable? Was a supposed to buy a cable that hooks up r-l/mono jacks of my R3 to the instrument input of the fast track? If so, where can I buy a cable like this?

Yes.

Ideally you should hook up both the L/Mono and R sockets to get a stereo recording (and record in stereo naturally) for the best effect.

The lead is a standard jack-to-jack instrument lead like a guitar lead or more commonly a shorter, cheaper lead...

Can I still record sound then by sending midi data through the fast track pro and into ableton? or does that not work because Midi isn't sound. You see, I was under the impression that ableton could interpret midi data and transfer it into sound.

MIDI data is note and performance data, nothing more. (Well, and sysex data, but that's not relevant here.)

What Ableton could do is take MIDI data from the R3 and apply it to soft synths on your computer -- so you'd have your R3 performance, but with a different set of sounds. Alternatively, Ableton could store that performance data and, with a second cable, send it back to the R3, playing the synth automatically based on the stored performance. However, to get R3 audio into Ableton, you'd have to run stereo TRS cables into your interface and record the tracks as audio.
