Korg Radias Editor

Post by Gurty »

Hi all!

This is the first time that i ever posted here and off course the first time is a problem and i hope that you guys have the solution for this.

Well here is my problem!
When i open the Radias Editor, it does synchronize but i don't hear any sound.
I have to admit the midi-in is on the Korg Radias and the Midi-out is on Radias Sound.
But i have 2 sound cards one onboard a Realtek High Def that i use for my games, and a M-Audio Delta that i use with Cubase.
But when i set Midi-out on my M-Audio sound card i get the "Device Inquiry Error".

The things i already tried:

- Firmware update
- Switching the midi-out
- Protected mode is off
- Somewhere in global i set a function to go only with the USB

I also want to let you guys know that i have the exact same problem with the Korg XMicro.

I hope you guys can help me out with this, because i can't find the Korg Netherlands Support number.

With kind regards,

Gurty

Connecting by USB or MIDI won't give you any sound from the computer. Sound still only comes from the Radias' L/Mono, R, alt 1 & 2, and Headphone sockets.

MIDI is a control interface that tells a synth what to do - change programs, set parameters, play notes, etc. It doesn't carry any audio signal, so setting the MIDI out to your audio card won't have any effect, other than causing the parameter changes and programs you transmit to not reach the radias (unless the radias happens to be connected to that MIDI port too)

Hi X-Trade thanks for the response.
So if iam not mistaken, the Korg Radias or Xmicro doesn't send sound to the computer, only if the midi channels are the same.

But what if i want to use Cubase with my Korg Radias and Vocoder ?

Then you connect the stereo pair audio outputs from the Radias to the input(s) on your sound card or audio interface, just like you would for recording any other instrument - microphone, guitar, bass, effects unit, synthesizer...

The USB doesn't carry any sound. Only MIDI information, which as I mentioned before, is only a way to control the Radias, what it plays, and its parameters. But that means the Radias still produces the sound.

I assume you mean your other synth is a Korg MicroX?

They all do the same thing, I don't think any KORG keyboard currently sends sound over USB. Some new synths from other manufacturers do but apparently it can be buggy. A dedicated Firewire or USB or PCI (card) audio interface tends to be the best way to go for best quality and recording reliability.

Well the manual described that, with use of the USB port it will send and receives midi.

Thats why i thought that Cubase would pick it up, because in Cubase when i set the Radias as Master Keyboard i get sound, but not from the Vocoder only the piano.

Well then its actually really simple, just hook up on the jack lines-in and then its ready to go!!

If you hook it up by USB (providing virtual MIDI connection), or by MIDI directly, it will allow you to record your performance on the Radias, as in, it will record data on what notes you play, how hard you hit them, what controllers you adjust, etc, but you will need the Radias plugged in and on that same program in order to hear it. changing the program for example would allow you to hear back your notes with a different program sound.

Obviously this is useful if you make a mistake and then need to correct it, or simply add in extra notes, more controller changes, or you change your mind about the tempo or the program sound to use for that track/line.

Once you've changed what you want, then you can send the MIDI track back out to the radias and record the resulting audio connection using the hook-up described previously, with audio cables. Then you would discard, delete, or at least mute the MIDI track because you've got audio recorded now (otherwise you would hear the audio recording and the MIDI track triggering the Radias on whatever sound it is set to, on playback).

This is why I usually record a MIDI and Audio track simultaneously, in case I need to change sound, tempo, or correct any mistakes or simply want to know what notes I played so that I can perform it live or make sheet music or something. But the MIDI track can be kept muted except for when you are working on it.

The other use of MIDI would be to use your Radias keyboard and knobs to control a softsynth plugin in cubase or otherwise on your computer. The softsynth plugin will usually allow you to map the control messages generated by the knobs to different knobs in the software, and creating an instrument track in Cubase, you can set the MIDI input to the Radias. Or if you have a MIDI track and a instrument loaded in the 'VST device rack', you can route that MIDI track to the instrument in the rack, and set the input to Radias.

The reason why you are only getting piano is that the Radias notes are triggering a synth built into cubase or windows (on your PC), so you're not hearing the Radias.

I have to stress, that MIDI is for controlling things. it sends out a stream of data saying what you are doing to the synth, not what sound it is making.
