Definitely. Just as Assyrian said, any MIDI soft-sequencer can be used. In fact it's a lot easier, imo, when you have a visual representation of what you're creating in front of you. I use Cubase 5 and Ableton. Build different Variations, then put it all together on the PA2X. Just like a lego puzzle.

Elektroman, can u please describe how it is done?

I am using Logic on a mac, there's also Garageband if it is useful....

what about if you're using sampled drumkits on the korg? can it still be done in an external sequencer?

I've never used logic and had very limited exposure to Garageband. Both are pretty powerful software packs, and definitely can assist you with making some beats and in turn, applying it to your styles on the pa2x. And yes you can do it even with your sampled drumkits. Essentially, you're not loading or transferring ANY sounds at all from PC to pa2x via MIDI, it is ONLY MIDI messages.
The way i do it in Abletone Live, is pretty straight forward.
I link up my PC with the Pa2x via MIDI, and Audio L/R out, to any normal set of speakers or PA/headphones so i can hear whatever is being played by the pa2x. Then i set up a track in Ableton, and set the corresponding channels and other parameters. On the pa2x i select any drumkit or sound, regardless if its sampled or not. Then i start making a loop or beat in Ableton, and the MIDI i'm working with on the PC, is being sent to the pa2x, therefore playing the sound pa2x has currently selected, for example your sampled drum-kit. This way i can hear/monitor exactly how it would sound, once the style has been created. Once i'm happy with my MIDI loops, i export them as MIDI. Then put them onto my pa2x and begin creating and putting together my styles and assigning the drum-kit i had selected earlier, as the sound to be played by the style.
I hope that made sense and i didn't confuse you even more. It's a little bit confusing and hard to swallow, if you don't know your way around MIDI or how it works.

But how would you make the other parts of the styles fills, intros, etc... ?
do you have to make a seperate midi file for each and them join them together by importing them into the pa2x? does something called SMF come in handy in this situation?

or am I confusing myself?

Hi,
find a onboard style you like,
go to stylemaker section of keyboard, EXPORT it as a single midifile, open it up in your pc sequencer, and you'll see exactly how it was put together.
You should be able to see all the MARKERS required, and all the different sections of the style. Study it, it's fascinating.
Style parts can be exported ( & imported back in ) individually, but the way to go is as ONE long midifile with markers.

Unfotunately my PA800 is in for repairs, so I can't be more specific.
Do yourself a favour & study the style creation functions in the manual, especially the Import / Export functions.

Maybe also look up some of the old posts Sam (assyrianpianst) & I did back in 2008? on styles, we went thru quite a learning curve, didn't we Sam. Bear in mind, with the last upgrade, the Importation & Exportation of a style as one long midifile came in, it made it so much easier.
