I'm very interrested in the new Patterns. It would be cool if someone could upload them or something just to hear what korg made different.
I just don't know whether i can load them into the "old" emx or not.
I would just try :)

Sorry if theres already a topic like this. I didn't found something.

I would say it is legal because korg doesn't earn money with them. Nobody would buy a new emx just because there are a few new patterns on i guess. So i'm pretty sure that this wouldn't be illegal. Anyone who can confirm this?

I'm a member over at the Moog forum & members freely upload OEM patches from one version of the Little Phatty synthesizer to another.

Using Sysex, if you can export them, then you can import them!

"not likely to make money from it" doesn't invalidate copyright law

however, it could be that by buying the EMX you are automatically granted a license to use the preset data, or it could be that Korg just don't care enough to enforce their copyright on the data

You can only use the patterns if you own an electribe emx-1!
And if you only change one pattern and save all to card it's not forbidden to give it to someone else.
So i think if you declare them as "My saved patterns" it's not forbidden to give them away!

By the way - I am interested too! 8)

@roxxx303
That's you true. You could also only go to each pattern select a synthpart and increase the level by one. So you would have changed a preset pattern to your own. :D

Well I didn't hear anything about Enter Shikari getting sued so.....

good point - if you can use presets in your own productions (which you can) you can share them

sure but everyone who owns an emx could do that you know what i mean? of course they're songs are all copyrighted but i think the copyright takes effect when you try to sell this copyrighted thing or pretend that you made this. and korg has the danger that practically everyone who owns an emx can do that. as long as i don't try to make commercial stuff with the presets i think it would be alright.

no, that's not how copyright works.

If I print 1000 copies of someone else's book and give them away free, without charging money and without claiming that I wrote it, that's still illegal.

yes. aah it's hard to explain with my limited english skills. but i think i will just write to korg and ask. that's the easiest way. but i think if you buy an emx you get the preset patterns as a kind of "bonus" or "extra". if i buy 6 bottles of cocacola and get the copyrighted cocacoal-xmas-truck as a "bonus" i'm not allowed to sell this. but to give it away. And noone can emx-patterns without having an emx. So i think korg got it's money. But that's all just guessing. i will write to korg so that we have a clear answer :)

I don't think it's your language skills, I think you just don't understand copyright :-)

you can sell it.

if I buy a book, I can sell it as second-hand - that's like selling your EMX, with the preset data still loaded.

if I buy a book, I can't copy it and sell copies - that's like copying the EMX-SD preset data and giving it to people who haven't paid for the EMX-SD
