Should I Get The R3 AND Strings Question?

Hi all,

Having played the R3 in shops, I think it's a pretty awesome bit of kit and definitely a lot of fun.
However, I'm trying to decide whether it's right for me..
I'm going for the sort of sound 30 Seconds to Mars use.

Anyone got any tips :)?

I have to admit that I'm a geezer so not really familiar with 30 Seconds To Mars. The R3 is a good choice if you are strictly looking for analog type sounds. I think the R3 is more suited for a "top rack" synth especially given the fact it has only a 3 octave keyboard. My R3 sets above my Roland Fantom X8 and I enjoy it for what it is. Just don't expect it to be an all around board that will give you great acoustic patches as well. Hope this helps with your decision process.

The R3 is a very versatile and useful little synth. It's very good at doing leads, pads and different keyboard type sounds, but I also like to call it "rhythmic" because of it's very flexible arpeggiator and mod sequencer; both are extremely fun to use and usually give instant results. All in all, it's a very "musical" board, I use it live with my band all the time together with my DSI mopho and KP3, and even my guitarist fears me ; it's just easy to carry around and my band mates love the sounds I get out of it.

Yes, the R3 is MIDI controllable.

It can cover much of what I hear played on synths in 30 Seconds to Mars songs.

You can get patches here in the korgforums download section and some strings besides others at my homepage (see below). Here at home I have more but for the Radias only.

I haven't seen any R3 patches (free or otherwise) outside of the ones available here and at Korg's own website.
