is this possible? I have each timber assigned to a separate MIDI channel in ableton and this all works until i change my program. If i haven't already set the MIDI channels in the program i move to, i am suddenly no longer playing music.

Is there any way to do this, aside from maybe copying a template program over each one already on my radias?

AFAIK, the channel setting is related with each program (which in other synths may be called Set, Patch, etc.) This makes sense because not all programs use all timbres and the R3dias are synths and not music workstations.

Best would be to use the sound editor to create a template with all timbres switched on, with their corresponding MIDI channel. Using this template then it is a breeze to copy other timbres in that template

Yes, the MIDI channel assignments is a part of each program, not global.

You can actually go further than that and use the Radias as a fully multitimbral sound module.
Instructions:
1. Set up the first program (A01?) to have all four timbres active, but with different MIDI channels for each timbre. None of these can match the global MIDI channel though, they have to be different, so in total your Radias is using up 5 MIDI channels (Global, T1, T2, T3, T4)
2. Make sure they are enabled to receive all types of messages, particularly program change (there are checkboxes for this).
3. Set up any preferred MFX e.g. master limiter or compression or possibly reverb.

Now whenever you start with this program you can use program change messages to those four timbres to select timbres from the other programs. I think in the MIDI Implementation Guide it explains what bank change messages you need to access different timbres in different banks. But effectively you can select any timbre from any program (which includes that timbre's IFX, mod sequences, etc) into any new timbre on your four-part multitimbral mode.
Of course you miss out on arpeggiator and step sequencer settings, envelope follower, etc.

You could also set up one of the timbres as a drum kit if you regularly use the Radias' excellent drum kits.

Yes, there is a way...but not too intuitive. As X-trade wrote above it is possible to send MIDI program change msgs to a timbre to switch it to another timbre. However this can get ugly since it will not change the assignments of arps and step sequences nor the master FX settings for the program.

To repeat: you are changing the timbres inside a program, not changing programs.
