Switching sounds during live performance

Post by GeraldBart »

Hi Everyone

I got myself an M50 about a month ago and am having fun with it.

I have been using a Yamaha PSR 1000 for live performances and while playing in church. With the Yamaha, when it comes to switching sounds, I can play a certain sound - for instance - 'strings' and select 'brass' while holding a chord. The strings sound will stll be playing unitl I lift up my fingers and play another chord and that is when the brass sound will come on

I was told that, that is the case for the Triton, but that doesn't seem to be so for the M50. The sound just cuts off when I switch sounds.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how I can switch sounds smoothly?

Thank you for reading my question and I would be most appreciative if anyone came provide me with any suggestion.

This can only be achieved in Program mode. In Combi mode, when you switch sounds, the sound cuts off. It's the same with the Triton and all Korg workstations, as far as i know. Ohter keyboard brands don't have this problem

Oh yes they do--my Yamaha Motif XS and Kurzweil cut off when you change patches.

I was talking about Roland. I don't know about Yamaha, but I was sure that Kurzweil keys didn't cut off the sounds, at least not like Korg keyboards.

I found a way to do this. It's a little difficult, and not perfect, but it works.

Hi Guys and Gals

Thanks for responding to my post. And Somnambulist, thanks for the suggestion. Sounds a little difficult, but I will give it a try. But I do feel that the Korg guys could have put a little bit more thought into this. It would have been great if they had provided a set of buttons, maybe 6 - 8, for assigning patches for each song when playing live.

Remember the M50 is a Workstation. That means that things like this can be done with a little work. They are not designed to be an arranger, a production system, a synthetizer, a drawbar organ or a piano by itself, but all of the above with a few compromises.
The good thing is that it can be done.

But then often the reason that they do not cut off when changing patches is due to their limited effects structure.

I think Korg (and Kurzweil) have the most flexible effects structures. The problem is that it takes a second to reconfigure that structure for the next sound.

anyway in program mode, the sound is not cut off. if you keep notes on, the sound remains, the only thing is that the IFXs applied are changed according to the new program selected and hence the sound can be modified with respect to previous program

in combi mode instead the sound is cut off

That's one of the FEW things that absolutely AMAZE me about the Fantom-G! I use it ALL the time when I'm recording because of it! :D
Because of that, I have been able to use a single Fantom G6 as my entire live rig with my 70s/80s cover band. There is no other keyboard that can do what it does, not even the Kurz PC3 (which I owned for more than a year). While it is true that there is only one insert effect per patch, I have never seen that as a limitation. I have always been able to easily program or resample around that.

In my oldies Ensoniqs (ESQ1/SQ1 Plus and SD1 32) no matter what way you were switching sounds, the previous one was always sustained. This technology was in the early 90's and Korg, in the XXI'st Century can't accomplish such a simple and useful feature... Korg: fire your engineers!
