Very basic question from a newbie considering the purchase of a Radias R. Does it automatically recognize the assigned pitches of the keys of a MIDI keyboard once MIDI communication is established?

Yes. I think so.
I'm not really sure what you are asking.
You just connect a MIDI keyboard and start playing.

Right, that's the point of having a standard like MIDI
You play Middle C on the keyboard, which sends MIDI note number 60, which causes a sound module to play Middle C

This will surely sound naive, but is the RADIAS just the control panel with knobs? I've assumed so far that the RADIAS was the panel as well as a keyboard designed and marketed together.

No, the Radias is a complete Synth with separate keyboard frame, what makes it possible to buy/use it as Rack or as complete keyboard synth. The sound engine is in the rack.

Ok, that makes sense. So in essence, the keyboard can be switched out without much hassle?
