A few answers

Post by RichF »

Hi all,

I've been reading through all the threads, and here are a few answers to questions I've seen come up:

RE: Delivery date- We're expecting to ship in the USA in late April.

RE: Drum pattern on sound change- Drum Tracks and KARMA will stop when switching to a different Program or Combi, but without cutting off their note release or effects.

RE: Built-in manual- The HELP button gives you all the documentation for KRONOS, both the the operation and parameter guides, with links to other relevant articles. It's context-sensitive, so chances are it already knows what page you want to see.

RE: Compatibility- With OASYS, It's a one-way street. You can load OASYS .PCG into KRONOS, but not the other way around. M3 .PCG cannot be loaded.

RE: Sequence compatibility- You can load OASYS songs and sequences into KRONOS. If the song contains audio tracks, you need to rename PRELOA_A to PRELOAD_A in Disk Mode, then they should work fine. This is because we now allow longer names in our file system.

RE: Previewing sounds- Programs and Combis can both be previewed in Disk mode, without having to load the banks.

RE: VMT sample playback- The internal 12gb of EXs libraries can be played directly from the internal SSD (with a small amount of information stored in sample RAM), but user samples will need to use sample RAM.

RE: Auto-loading- You can now auto-load .KSC files, including your own samples.

RE: Sample RAM- After loading the entire PRELOAD.KSC, about 273MB are left for user RAM. This is not set in stone, however, since you can pick and choose what you want to use. For example, if you know that you're not going to use the EXS4 Vintage Keyboards library, you can unload it and get more space.

RE: SSD reliability- SSD technology has come so far in such a short amount of time that major computer manufacturers (i.e. Apple) are using them as sock parts on some very popular computers. We, however, are using commercial-grade components, not consumer-grade. In short, we're very confident in the reliability of our drives.

RE: Effects- Additions are present in EP-1, in the form of the SV-1's vintage effects, and the CX-3, where the rotary speaker emulation is built-in without using an effect slot.

RE: Polyphony- Here's the maximum polyphony for each engine:
SGX-1: 100 voices
EP-1: 104 voices
HD-1: 140 voices
AL-1: 80 voices
CX-3: 200 voices
STR-1: 40 voices
MOD-7: 52 voices
MS-20EX: 40 voices
PolysixEX: 180 voices

I misspoke in a few of my demos at NAMM, saying that the MS-20EX was capable of 48 voices. The correct spec is 40 voices. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. So close to a PS-3300... :)

RE: Customizing a Set List- There are two tabs in Set list mode, "Play" and "Edit." Among other things, the "Edit" tab gives you large Cut, Copy, Insert, and Paste buttons. Just touch a location, touch Cut or Copy, then touch another location, and touch Paste. If you touch Insert, it will move the selected location (and all after it) ahead one space to make room for the new one.

RE: Aftertouch- Yes, KRONOS has pressure-sensitive channel aftertouch on all three keyboard models.

RE: EXs4 Vintage Keyboards- This includes clavs, reed/tine-based EPs, and acoustic pianos with damper and tailpiece.

RE: EXs5 ROM Expansion 2- This includes tape-based keyboards, percussion instruments, drum kits, sound effects, and prepared pianos.

RE: Scales- KRONOS includes per-program settings, including equal temperment, pure major, pure minor, Arabic, Pythagoras, Werkmeister, Kirnberger, Slendro, Pelog, Stretch, User All Notes, and User Octaves (with 16 customizable slots). Some SGX-1 piano types also inherently use stretch tuning.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Rich - we are really thankful for your ability and willingness to provide factual answers (where possible) that will hopefully stop a good amount of conjecture around here :)

Much appreciated!

Thanks Rich!
I have two questions for you regarding the SetList mode.

1. As i can see on the available photos on the net i can see that the screen only shows the patchnumber, bank & what engine it uses, but it does not show the actual name of the patch(program/combi)? which is critical, If i have three AL-1 patches in a row and i cant see the names of them i will have problem selecting the proper patch i am looking for (for example "prg I-A crazy sound effect")

2. Does the Set list work with pedal "program up", ie im on patch 32 (which is perhaps combi I-85 lets say) and want to go to patch 33 in the setlist without lifting my hands on the keyboard when i press the pedal does it go to sound nr 33 or does it go to combi I-86 in combi mode and jumps out of set list mode?

Thanks for the time you spend on the forums, It's Really preciated!

Rich, I have another (perhaps very important to some) question:

Since sample preloading is so advanced on Kronos, what happens with the programs and combis which are using multisamples from unloaded EXs? Does Kronos show a warning that there might be samples missing, does it just do nothing and the patch remains silent, or are those programs not loaded at all then?

It would be extremely useful if Kronos would be able to display some kind of warning when a missing multisample is not loaded, and to show which multisample from which EXs is needed for it to make it work again!

As you can guess this is particularly important for HD-1 programs, but other engines which can use multisamples as their input would be affected by this, too...

As I envision it (if this feature isn't yet in Kronos), the best way to implement this would be: upon loading a program/combi, if it has missing multisamples, display a yellow or red exclamation mark next to patch name (or somewhere in the patch name area). Then, when we touch that exclamation mark, we get detailed info about which multisamples from which EXs are missing for this particular program/combi.

The Set List buttons have four lines, which show:
Slot number
Slot name
Program/Combi bank & number, or Song number and current Track
Program, Combi, or Song name

So, I think you're set!

Yes, when you're in a Set List, Program Up increments through Slots in the Set List.

EvilDragon- Yes, a warning message appears. You can actually see it in the screenshot of EP-1 or HD-1 on this page: http://korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=598#feat . It's at the top, a little red box that says "Samples Not Loaded."

Jon-
1. By default, a Set List slot will show the name and address of the Program or Combi on the bottom two rows. Above that, you can customize text to read whatever you like.

2. Yes, the pedal will function as "program up" in Set List mode.

This is awesome! Do we get to touch that warning and see what exactly is missing?

You are really a thoughtful bunch! ;)

Just as you suggest: if the current sound uses samples which are not currently loaded, the message "Samples Not Loaded" appears at the top of the display.

Additionally, in Combinations and Songs, the specific Program(s) which are missing samples are marked in red.

The second part is a good idea, I agree! We've discussed it too, as a possibility for the future. The KRONOS doesn't do this currently, however.

Thanks for your quick and awesome reply, Dan! Here's to hoping for implementing that feature in one of the possible updates. It's really nice that you've actually given thought to that feature (as it can be proven really useful), that gives more hope to actually see it implemented. Thumbs up!

Oh, oh, oh!

While I'm at it: if you get to implementing that detailed info about what's missing, it should feel very natural to have a Load/Unload button next to the each entry in that warning dialog! Also, there could be a checkmark right below that which would say "remember these preload settings", which would basically add those multisamples back to the preload list!

Sorry if I'm jumping ahead of the horse, which isn't even out yet!

Thanks for the quick support, one more question about the setlist (which is the most awesome feature ever combined with smooth transitions btw!)

Image

The text under the program name on the top (that says "the sgx-1 premium piano exi is designed...")
Does this change per program/combi in setlist mode and are you able to set this yourself per/program/combi Or is this per page/setlist?
And is this text user-editable? if yes this is awesome to put notes on for songs that you need to remember to do

So if the EP-1 (MDS) page shows "SAMPLES NOT LOADED", is it correct to assume MDS technology combines sampled source data with some type of modeling? Can you explain what's going on in a little more detail?

Thanks
