ScoobyDoo555 wrote:Another +1 for the TG77. It's a 3U - BIG beast.

Lots of outputs and monster sound (AFM & AWM).
I've toyed with changing my SY77 for TG but I just love the keyboard too much - I've had it since I purchased new in 1993 (£2700!) I know it VERY well.

Check it out - great bit of (highly under-rated IMHO) kit. Makes a lot of stuff sound very weak indeed. FM7 doesn't come close. The Motif doesn't come close.
Great additional timbre and sonics to a production. I still use mine all the time.

Dan :)
I used to own an Sy35 which I thought was poor overall :(had a good sitar sound though),
If you know just wanted to ask about the SY55, SY77, SY85 and SY99.(or the rack versions if there is one for all of them) what is the main differences between them? Which is the best of those soundset wise?
Presumably they must all be much better than the Sy22 and Sy35?

Yeh, the 22 and later 35 certainly aren't as powerful (imho, they were quite noisy)
The biggest boon of the 22/35 was the ability to record vector movements into your presets - V COOL. (something you can't do in the "meatier" models) And you could edit them to make some nice ambient sounds.
The TG33 was a table-top version, although I did see a few people build rack plates for them.
1 part FM & 1 part AWM2 Both 16 note poly but 8 part multi-timbral.

The SY35 had more sampled waveforms (considerably expanded)

The SY55 & TG55 (now a 1u rackmount) - both 16 note polyphony & 16 part multi-timbral. 2 x the oscillators too.
SY55 had a built in sequencer.
Main other difference was 2x multi-timbral. Still using AWM & FM.

SY77 - 24 note polyphony /16 part multi=timbral
6 oscillators
2 fx units
Built in sequencer.
TG77 - 3U rack without disk drive and sequencer.
http://www.sonicstate.com/synth/_inc/sp ... ynthid=512
http://www.vintagesynth.com/yamaha/sy77.php

SY99 - Same as SY77 (in essence), but with 76 note keyboard. Onboard sample ram, 8 more notes polyphony, better effects and more waveforms. No rackmount
http://www.sonicstate.com/synth/_inc/sp ... ynthid=183

SY85 - AWM2 workstation with lots of ROM sounds.
Letterbox editing window
MOre polyphony etc
Didn't have the FM "sound" of the previous SYs....
Highly rated (not by me though, FWIW!!)
http://www.sonicstate.com/synth/_inc/sp ... ynthid=182
TG500 is the closest to a rack IIRC.
http://www.sonicstate.com/synth/_inc/sp ... ynthid=584

Soundset-wise, kinda depends on whether you want fm-sound or not.....

Hope this helps

sy77 = sy99 ??? both just romplers?

uhm...

I seem to remember a FM section in the sy99, but I owned it for maybe a month, and it was many many years ago.

I am probably wrong. Boy, it was so hard to program, it looked like an FM synth (but sounded indeed like a rompler, that's why I ditched it)

GOOD GOD no. The 77 & 99 are most certainly NOT romplers...... (trying to see where I gave that impression)

They are SO much more than that - but the presets are woeful. You need to spend time editing them - so far I'm up to 18 years...

Starting to get somewhere now!!

Because there's nothing to see. Everything is in storage right now, except my OASYS, Tyros 4 and some monitors.

Do you even realize how long it's gonna be before I'm up and running again?

I'm hoping to get things up and running again by June (that's 2 months from now).

Plus, I don't even know you man and you wanna come over, see where I live, etc just because you don't believe me?

How do I know your not some geek off the street and a thief with a criminal record living in some sh*t hole of an apartment?

Last time I trusted some people with my OASYS in 2008, it got stolen!

My WHOLE life came to a halt, because of it and I literally suffered on an emotional level to the point where I couldn't even live. I was dead on the inside because the ONE thing that meant MORE to me than life itself was gone.

Believe me, don't believe me, I honestly don't give a flying f***. If I don't know you, you're NOT allowed under my premises. Period.

Sina
... i'd settle for a few pics of oasys keyboards (all in one shot), with a piece of paper with a handwritten note saying... PROOF TO THE KORG FORUMS FROM SINA...

i think that would end all the disbelief.
