Here is a solution / some wishes - some thoughts.....

Post by Adje »

Hi all,

For about six months now I proudly own a SV-1 (88-keys) :D .
I just love the instrument but I do have this:

Here is a solution / some wishes - some thoughts.....
Maybe someone with KORG will read it and do something with it.....

A solution:
*-I'm using MS Windows 7 (X64) Home Premium with the latest KORG MIDI-driver. Everytime I want to upgrade/downgrade the SV-1 firmware it tells me it's USB connected (usb2400) but no new drive is added to put the firmware in as described in the firmware-how-to PDF.
This is my work-around to get it done:
Disconnect the USB SV-1; close all applications/windows; on the desktop right-click Computer; Manage (as Administrator); Disk Management ((you will notice connecting with VDS) all available drives can be seen); connect the SV-1 to USB as described in the firmware-how-to PDF and wait for a maximum of 30 seconds (you will see a new drive is added to the PC); don't close this particular window but just open the file-explorer. Now you can copy the new firmware to the SV-1 drive and follow the other steps mentioned in the PDF.

I think I discovered two bugs in the firmware both 1.1 and 1.2:
*-When you play with the GrandPiano2 patch holding down the damper so you can hear the string-resonance; and then pull away your hands and feet; quickly change to the EP/Amp preset for instance; don’t do anything but just turn up the volume to the max (10) and you will still hear the string-resonance of the GrandPiano2 patch fading. This isn’t nice playing through a P.A. in a concert hall.

*-When I select some "drive" on top of the Tremolo; the Tremolo isn’t what it initially was.

Now some wishes - thoughts:
*-I’m missing that one distinguish Rhodes-sound used on so many records from Al Jarreau (Mornin’ mostly the 80’s), Mezzoforte (E.G. Blues and a lot of other songs), Yellow-Jackets (Sittin’ it), George Benson (Being with you), Shakatak (Day by day), George Duke, and so on. It’s a kind of dyno-rhodes with a mix of Boss CE-1 chorus or an Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phaser and a specific Mid EQ. I think you know what I mean.
Of course I tried to make me one with the tools available in the product but I didn’t come close enough. Could you make one in let’s say firmware version 1.3 ? PLEASE!!!???
You can check this article: http://www.fenderrhodes.com/service/dyno-sound.php

*-GrandPiano1 (Yamaha C7 ?), GrandPiano2 (Steinway model D40?); they are both very nice but how about reproducing a Fazioli F228, Bosendorfer 225 and a Malmsjo Grand in the future ? I’m missing these.

*-It would be nice if the user could change the volume of the release samples.
I’m not talking about the RX-noise (mainly key press noises). I’m talking about the noise which the original instrument makes when you release a key.
I’m trying to make me a “Rob Franken” (keyboard player Toots Thielemans) –Rhodes and therefore I need to make the release samples sound harder; and no..... the EQ or AMP won’t do the trick.

*-If the user makes his own sounds by using the EQ and AMP -features all the sounds can vary big time in volume. Therefore you should be able to alter the overall master volume per preset so you end up with some preset normalization just as you would do when you produce a CD-album. I couldn’t locate it in the editor.

*-It would be nice if the user could layer whatever sounds in the SV-1.

*-Give the user the possibility to split up the keyboard at any point to use different sounds at the same time.

*-Give the user the possibility to split up the keyboard at any point to use different sounds at the same time but this time using not only internal sounds but external also by sending a MIDI-channel from a certain part of the keyboard. For example C0-C4 transposed internal GrandPiano2 and C#4-C9 a transposed brass section from a MIDI-module.

*- Give us better tonewheel Hammond sounds and Lesly like in the GSi VSTi VB-3.

For now this is all I have to share.
Best regards,
Adje.

Big +1 here!

This is exactly what has kept me from buying a SV-1 88.
Remedy it, and I'm sure I won't be the only new purchaser.

Cheers, hanon
I used to play Korg instruments, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Ditto...

People have been calling for the ability to split/layer the instrument for ages and Korg have shown the instrument is capable of it.
Certainly the lack of these features have put people off buying it and it appears that the updates are few and far between.
It could really be a more versatile instrument and their sales would improve by implementing some programming improvements within the editor.
I'm not sold on the instrument yet but will check back periodically.

I have the SV1 and very much enjoy playing it and listening to it.

But...I would love to be able to have more versatility in the split keyboard arena too. I want to choose what instruments to use in the split and choose where to split as well.

I think they should be able to make this change in the editor software easily, which would be just fine. I don't need it on the board itself - once I have it programmed, I don't usually fiddle during a show.
