2loose - Artifax - May 2011
Ok, I'll just admit this upfront. I was listening to a bunch of Devo and got inspired to compose this piece. Though I'm staying with my instrumental set this one's intended to be funny and edgy at the same time while modernizing the old 'new-wave' genre. Appreciate any thoughts and/or suggestions.

Nice. I like how there is so much going on at once. I think your use of panning really gave it that illusion at times. Really cool. And I think it turned out to be more of an edgy piece here. More due to the fact that there were a lot of low tones going at once. I think higher leads at times maybe could've added some 'humor'. Nothing needs to be changed though, I like how it all worked out.
Good work George.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the link isn't working. I had to navigate through your page to find the song.

Sorry, I fixed the link, hopefully that works. And thanks for the comments. I know I border on too busy most of the time, but I do try to rain in the sounds enough that they all work together. And over the years I've gotten much better at letting a piece develop organically and then after a bit of tweaking just leave the darn thing alone. I used to sweat over every nuance so much that I never felt a song was finished. Now, if I like it and it doesn't sound messed up I just leave it alone.

favorite thing was the talking bass around 1:40 Great sound design on that one.
The instruments in the piece definitely mesh and i do get the edgy/comical emotions. Theres a very vintage feel to this song, were you sending the instruments to a plate reverb channel?
All in all another very well done piece.

Thank you CharlesFerraro, I did use a couple different reverbs on this as I usually do. Some on particular tracks and some overall mastering reverb. And your ear is good, I used a talking effect on the track that does the lead sound, but it does more than just the lead as I liked what it was doing when I rolled my finger on the effects ribbon. Also, while it may not stand out, I did some different things with the drums, like some portions not using a snare at all and just a different kick drum kicking out certain parts of the beat all by itself.

Hi George,
that talking bass is interesting and fun. My favorite part of this tune is the motif that you introduce at 3:29 - the brass along with the bass. Sounds very cool. Up to this point there is a bit too much chaos for my taste
. This isn't a criticism just my subjective point of view.
cheers
sewa
P.S. Interesting CD cover by the way!

Thanks, Sewa, I guess I made this a bit crazy and busy on purpose. I was trying to blow the lid off and make it wacky and a bit out of control, so it was intentional. I know your approach is extremely clean with every note carefully thought out and that is a good way to make a strong composition, esp in electronica. I should probably try doing more of that sometimes. I do keeping adding and adding sometimes and it can get to be too much. It's been a big switch for me to instrumentals, as when I'm going to add vocals I do have to keep it more sparse to allow for the voice to be heard and understood.

I do appreciate his music, but his was not the stuff we listened to back in the day. Mine was Ultravox, Kraftwerk, Human League, Thompson Twins, Heaven 17. Those 'new wave' bands were the most influence on me in the 80s. And I was listening to something by one of those groups the other day and I noticed how busy it was, constant hand claps and stuff going all over the place. I do think it's ok to a point, but not too crazy. I do agree there.

Thank you, John. There are a lot of different sounds there, I tried to utilize some of the new vintage sounds I downloaded. And I was going for wacky and fun, so hopefully that's what you heard.
