I am learner and new to Korg and M50. When I change a Program, the drum Pattern also changes. Obviously, this is a problem in the middle of a song. I am sure there is a way to change Program without changing Drum Pattern, but I am unable to find it in the manual or by googling. Can someone help me with this?

The drum track is saved with the program so it will always change when you move from program to program.

We need more details though, as you mentioned a reference to a song. Are you also referring to the M50 sequencer?

I am just trying to play a song using a lead tone (program) and having a suitable drum pattern as accompaniment. This is just in Program mode. I record the Audio output using Sonar X1.

create combis with common drum pattern and diff prog.else rec in seq mode the chords and after that while the entire thing plays back ,play the keyboard on top of it

I was hoping that there will be a way of doing this on the fly without having to create and save new combis beforehand for each song. I just moved to M50 from Juno-G and this was an easy task in Juno-G.

A lot depends on how quick & slick you are with program changes.

I don't think there's much you can do in program mode, but in combi you could change your lead / comp / solo patches easily, by either working the track balance (mix) to highlight what you wanted from a preset combi or by just changing (not saved - non-permanent) the lead patch (usually channel 1) to what you want next... trick being that you have to know a bank or number.

It's not a big thing to write a simple combi, so I'm not real clear about your objections to doing so.

Yes, program mode on the M-50 does have a drum pattern, but it's secondary to the program. You can change drum patterns pretty much seamlessly as needed - it's icing on the core cake that is the program.

But combi is the logical place to go the other way around - having the groove be the established foundational piece, with the tonal colors built on top and changeable.

I am pretty sure you can change the drum track in a program just as easily as yo can in Combi mode. You can save the modified Program by pressing the "Write" command but unfortunately, Korg in all of it's wisdom, does not provide for blank Program slots so you will have to overwrite some other existing program to save your custom program. It is also easy to return modified programs back to factory original parameters.

BUT MIND U ACCOMP BASED KEYBOARDS SUFFER DRASTICALLY FROM INFERIOR QUALITY OF TONES AND EVEN GW 8 ROLAND DOESNT ALLOW U TO USE IFX{ROLAND CALLS MFX} IN SEQ MODE.SO U WILL END UP USING DRY TONES WHILE SEQUENCING AND E.GUITARS WOULD SOUND AWFUL.BUT KORG GIVES U THE ABILITY TO USE 5 IFX 2 MFX+1 TFX REALTIME IN PROG,COMBI,SEQ MODES .THE OVERALL SEQUENCE WILL THUS BE AMAZINGLY NICE.I TESTED THIS OUT MYSELF.BELIEVE ME.

MY SUGGESTION IS THAT CREATE A COMBI WITH ARP RUNNING FOR LEFT HAND TONES...FOR THIS U NEED TO SPLIT THE KEYBRD.THIS WILL ALSO ALLOW U TO CREATE SEQUNCED CUE LISTS WHILE SONG WRITING.

No blank program slots (?!) on the m-3... Really?

My Triton Extreme came with blank (init) program and combi slots, hard to believe they wouldn't do the same for a flagship synth [then I threw out what I didn't want and imported nearly 3 banks of stuff that I did]. Sure hope Kronos has a few blanks for my sounds.

Korg's biggest advantage (IMO) over other makers is that they've done away with permanent presets - you can change, tweak, edit, arrange, initialize, or completely get rid of anything you want (or don't) on your board.

True, you can change the drum groove in a program, either by scrolling or clicking on a specific pattern from the menu -- it's also seamless; no break of effect or beat skips, which is nice.

O.P. question was about keeping the groove and changing the sound - don't know, myself, a seamless way to do that in program mode.

With Juno-G, I was able to select a suitable drum pattern for the cover song I want to play, let it run and test with various lead tones to select the one that sounds good with the groove for the specific melody. Somehow I want to be able to do this in my new M50. I have started learning the combi mode and will be trying to achieve this in combi mode over the weekend. I am in the learning phase now, and try to learn to play the lead for two cover songs (South Indian POP songs) a week. So, I am trying to be able to do this quickly.

The topic is the M50 not the M3. I will double check on blank Program slots but I seem to recall already having to overwrite a program I didn't want in order to save a modified program I did want.

Pardon typo, M-50. Not seeking argument.

All Korg boards I've owned, Trin, 01W, Triton Classic, Rack, Extreme, have had some init "user" spaces without need to overwrite factory patches. Only Trinity Rack and M1 were wall to wall voices with no space for other (user) patches.

Full editability should be true of either board tho'. So save factory set to media or computer and edit - so no insurmountable issue.
