No... it cannot be possible

Post by aron »

When I first asked about the Kronos, I specifically asked if a mute would not eat polyphony in a combi:

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... ht=#369406
Can you assign it so it always works this way? I'd like to have 8 sounds ready to go at any time and use the mute/unmute buttons to bring in the sounds and when muted, save polyphony. In addition, I'd like to mix in the programs using the sliders.
I was told:
Yes, you can do these things, and we have a dedicated control surface mode that instantly assigns the switches and sliders to mute and volume.
So why is that when I mute, I see that I am using 21 notes of polyphony for 1 piano note?

All channels are muted and only the first channel is playing - however other muted channels are assigned to the global channel.

Please tell me that I have something set incorrectly. A muted channel should not eat polyphony. If this is the case, then this is terrible.

Well, it could be that one piano note is triggering a lot of different samples. Since SGX-1 is rated to go up to 400 voices, I would say that might be the case here.

Or it could be that the software counts muted programs even though they don't have any effect on the PCU. But I think EvilDragon is right.

Mute everything and see what happens then.

None of the above.

I have confirmed that if you set all other channels to 2 and only have the piano on global (chan 1), then pressing one note will say 1 in the performance meters.

Adding MUTED channels with chan set to 01G will eat up the polyphony.

You know how you can tell? When you unmute, the muted notes sound exactly like the volume was 0, then set to the value of the fader.

It's not like the Kurzweil where you unmute and you hear nothing, then subsequent notes start sounding the unmuted patch.

Is the OASYS like this too?

Damnit!!!!!!!!!!

Everything MUTED and one note = 31 voices
Voice stealing is maxxed out if I play a few notes.

I guess you will find the answer in this OASYS Thread:

I don't think so. IIRC hitting the Mute button just disconnects the audio output from the track.

That's what I have to say.

Kurzweil still wins with polyphony stealing algorithm, then.

Actually, you did not "specifically ask if a mute would not eat polyphony in a combi".

You asked three questions in the same post:
-- Can you assign the front panel buttons to mute/unmute programs in a combi?
-- Can you assign the sliders to control the volumes for each program in the combo?
-- Can you assign it so it always works this way? I'd like to have 8 sounds ready to go at any time and use the mute/unmute buttons to bring in the sounds and when muted, save polyphony. In addition, I'd like to mix in the programs using the sliders.

I don't know the specific answer to your question, but RichF appears to answer the "can you assign" questions when he says "yes, you can do these things", meaning:
-- Yes, you can assign the front panel...
-- Yes, you assign the sliders...
-- Yes, you assign it so it works that way...

RichF never specifically talks about polyphony, so I doubt he noticed the "save polyphony" statement after the end of your third question.

I have owned three Korg workstations, and on all of them, muting sounds did not affect polyphony. Highly unlikely, I'm afraid, that it will work that way on Kronos...

Hi,

on Oasys like Daz explained the mute button don´t avoids that polyphony is affected. Therefore you have to switch the status to "off".
Another possibility is posted here in the Oasys tipps and tricks section by tokke using karma

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... 01&start=0

hope that helps

Well then take out that work - even though here's a definition:

"Concerned particularly with the subject specified"

Yes I am concerned. I can barely layer a piano, ep +fm without lots of voice stealing that I hear.

I've mentioned polyphony many times with re: to the Kronos. In fact the reason why I bought was when Rich said something "like say goodbye to polyphony limits."

Can this be easily fixed by an OS update?

That is a bit concerning. Are you noticing this when sequencing/multitracking, or just when playing?

Should be as an adjustment of polyphony stealing algorithm. "Process muted parts YES/NO".
