Kontrol 49 & Live 8

Post by benjos »

i don't think i'm running proper. i don't know since i'm new to computer centered music.
can i please get advice on syncing my Kontrol 49 with Ableton Live 8 on Win 7 32 bit?
will 'syncing' mean knobs and sliders will control different instrument parameters when i open the instrument? that's what i'm trying to accomplish.
thanks for taking the time.

'Syncing' generally refers to getting two devices to play in time. For example for recording a groovebox or drum machine into Ableton.

This doesn't really apply for most controllers because there's nothing to 'sync'.

You might need to clarify exactly what you want to do. But generally speaking, you can map knobs to parameters in Ableton, it has an excellent 'learn' facility. I don't think you can just do it like that for plugins though. I haven't had the opportunity to test it.

well, not syncing then. i'm jong at the ableton. i expected the kontrol 49 to control ableton. and automap to take up slack by setting sliders & knobs for instrument and effects i've selected in ableton.
is that 'automap'? that's what i'm looking for.
is the correct setup for the controller the one that works? are there different degress of function - i would not recognize when everything is working perfect. thanks.

Do you have the program 'Automap'? that's Novation software.
You might want to have a look at a few posts in the Ableton Forum. Here's one that I picked up on a quick google search:

I haven't used the K49 so I'm not entirely sure how it works, beyond the basics that all MIDI controllers do.
Apparently it has a 'Native Mode', but I don't think its supported in Live.

Actually, I take that back.

If you go in live to:
Preferences > MIDI
Select the MIDI In and Out ports at the top, and select 'Kontrol49' as the control surface type.

Then I think you have to put the K49 in 'Native Mode'.
