This Lead is Driving Me Insane

This lead sounds insanely simple to recreate. And I can't do it.

To my ear, it just sounds like two saws, slightly detuned.

Yet, I'm slightly picking up on some distortion, possibly modulated distortion.

All of the leads I create fall flat.

Here it is, the first sound other than the drums is what I'm after:
(warning, contains lethal dose of transvestite)

Unfortunately can't find an HQ version.

Anyways, any ideas on how I should proceed? What type of post-processing should I use in my DAW? Any ideas on wether there's distortion or not, and if so what type (it sounds almost a little pulse toned- should I be using pulse waves, not saws)?

I think here a combination of PWM with a sawtooth tuned an octave below might be a better option. Still crank that per-voice drive fairly high.

Here's an attempt: http://soundcloud.com/wolf-ray/jeffreystarlead-1
note: soundcloud compression is terrible, the noise floor is clear as day.

I used an OSC1 saw set to unison within the oscillator. the phase is 75% and amp drive is similarly high. added a touch of chorus and a lot of compression.

To nail it, I think you would need a synth that can stack oscillators and let you adjust their phase. The osc unison in MMT would be perfect if it didn't stack so many oscillators at once (6). You need more like 3 and then carefully adjust their phase and the attack.

I have a soft synth called Carbon 2 that can do just that. NI was giving it away for free for a while.

Anyway i'm not sure how they're getting that wa-wa sound in the beginning of the sequence.
