Korg Forums

Hi all.
Just a quick note to say that the forum outage today was down to my host closing access to the forum. To a large degree I can't blame them as we have grown beyond my wildness dreams.

I need to now move KF to a dedicated server ASAP...!!!!
KORG USA have offered to help months ago and we did even run tests. So I will contact them and let them know that times up and we need to move now.

In the mean time to keep my HOST happy I've disabled the Search engine, and only logged in registered users can read the forum. This will keep CPU cycles down.

Stay tuned for more updates and the inevitable planned outage when the forum moves to KORG USA's servers.

Good to hear that Korg is helping you. I think this is far the best Korg forum in the world (and synth Forum in general).

Will this by any shot in the dark speed up the process on getting a android/iOs app? or make it tapatalkk enabled?

Yes we were looking at phpBB3 which is tap talk compatible.

Just been talking with my HOST again and they are happy with the changes I've made to lock out non-registered members as it's reduced our CPU load. We are still eating up too much RAM, but they are happy to let me run with things until I can arrange for KORG USA to take the load.

Just sent the information to KORG USA now, so.... we will see now what happens. If the offer is still open from KORG, then it should happen quick. If not then … ho feck, I need to find the cash to pay for a dedicated sever.

Hello,

I know from experience that phpBB is a power/resources hungry beast. When my old RC community forum went over 800 visits a day my server started crashing more often than not.

Even when I upgraded to the newer 3 version the load didn't went down as expected.

I sincerely recommend switching to another board solution. The best one I know and use is http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/

Just out of curiosity. When you have 1000 visits a day, and let's say you were only allowed to have up to 600, is there anyway for the board to determine all that extra 400 visits were actually genuine users and not spam bots? because if they count every single visit including spam bots attacking the forum, then this could get out of control. I was wondering if limiting the forum only to registered users could provide a more genuine visit counts?

spambots that post spam are registered users, or they wouldn't be able to post

Sharp has already restricted the site to registered users only

if there was a way to identify spambots and prevent them from requesting pages or submitting posts, it would've been done already, not just because it creates load on the server

if the problem is the load on the server, it doesn't matter if the page requests come from spambots or real users, they still create load

We are by many thousands well beyond that figure. As for spambots, there are certain measures in place that prevent them from using bandwidth. There are IP ranges completely blocked out from countries like Nigeria and China for example.

Running the database and searching through it.
The forum database is over 450MB in size.

Update…. KORG USA has completed the first test of running the forum on their server. Just two problems to overcome and we can test again.

If the second test resolves the problem, we can post a date of when the switchover will take place.
