It's Xmas time!!!

And I have an awesome family member who is deserving of much. Long story short, he recently picked up a Kaossilator and has not put it down. I need to surprise him for the holidays, and intend to do so, hence I need your help.

I know very little about the unit itself, and what its limits are. I need input on what would make a great gift to accompany the Kaossilator, and why. Budget is ~500 usd, but I can bend on that if need be.

Please help this idiot brother who knows nothing about Korg products.

(if it helps, the recipient is into Industrial/ebm/the like. I can name acts if need be).

Does he have a Kaossilator, or a kaossilator Pro?

I have the pro version and I love having it connected to my Kaoss Pad 3. Well within your budget and an excellent companion!

whether he has a kaossilator (small yellow and silver one) OR the kaossilator pro (grey metal chassis with green LED touch pad) the kaoss pad 3 is a great companion for either and well within your budget.

I own the Kaossilator and Kaossilator Pro, and I use them with the KP3, EMX-1, and miniKP. But I would highly recommend getting the iPad2 16GB WiFi over any other gear to complement the Kaossilators. There are just so many great music iPad apps that it has become my best music purchase in years. The Korg iMS-20 synth app is one of the best values going. Nanostudio is excellent too. Then there's iElectribe, GarageBand, and many more. Plus I can use the iPad for other things

I'll second the iPad recommendation -- for $500, you can get an iPad 2, with 16GB memory and wifi networking.

I'd also suggest you add a $50 iTunes gift card to the package, so he can start buying some musical instrument apps, like:
iElectribe: the Korg Electribe groovebox app
iKaossilator: The Korg Kaossilator app
iMS-20: The Korg MS-20 synthesizer app

There are at least a dozen other good synthesizer & sampler apps, too.

damn, you guys are making ME want an ipad2.
The ielectribe and ims20 are pretty much the main reasons, too. (that, and I had previously purchased the ikaossilator only to discover my ipod touch was basically dead)

Dont mean to hijack this thread, but one question: Is 16gb enough space for all these apps, and then some? Are you guys good still good with hd space?

I have 3 music apps that are under 18MB, so that means I'll have to stop downloading new apps of that size when I reach about 900 of them to reach 16GB of storage. GarageBand is a bit of a space hog at 470MB, but there's only one GarageBand. Nano Studio is about 96MB.

I bought the 32GB+3G-AT&T model. I knew that I didn't need 64GB, since I have an 8GB iPod 3rdGen that I could use to gauge how much I space I used for many of my apps and data. Since I planned to do some video stuff on the iPad with iMovie, paying an extra $100 to double from 16GB to 32GB was worth it to me, but I wouldn't have needed the extra storage for just music apps, and the 3G wouldn't be need either. The 16GB WiFi model is just fine for music apps.

If you're going to use the iPad to hold your music collection, you might need more than 16Gb -- all those mp3 files (or AAC, in Apple's case) take up a lot of space. Otherwise, 16Gb is more than enough room for synth & other instrument apps.

To the OP: The Korg Kaoss Pad 3 is also a good idea, and you can get one for about $300, which is much less than the cost of an iPad.
The iPad touch screen can get a little fiddly when you're playing music, and it's a pain to try to deal with that if you're playing live.
The Kaoss Pad 3, on the other hand, is much easier to play live, and complements the Kaossilator very well.

They're both good options; it really depends on how your brother wants to make music.

OP here, first and foremost, thank you all for the input. It is very much appreciated. Now, after some additional research prompted by this forum, it looks like KP3 is the way to go.

In regards to the Ipad2 responses, the recipient in question is VERY anti apple (Choosing not to start that discussion here), but that begs the question: Should I assume that there are similiar apps on android tablets?

Alas, I share your family members' resentment of apple products and love my Android phone. But it's musical apps are toys compared to the stuff you can get on an iPad.

It's slowly getting there (google 'caustic for android'), but I'm afraid it'll take a manufacturer with a reputable name to get attention to Android music apps.
