Korg recommends a DVD Drive that is not USB port-powered. I cannot find any in local stores (Houston TX).
Please respond with your experience with various port-powered drives. Let's determine which ones work for restore, and which ones do not work. Please list the make and model number of the DVD Drive you have tried and your experience with it.

LG Portable Super Multi Drive
Model No. GP08NU20
No PSU, but comes with a twin USB lead just in case one port does not supply enough power. Kronos powered up the drive with a single USB lead.
Boots and reinstalls Kronos OS with no problems.

for what it is worth, i successfully restored my Kronos using a USB powered DVD drive. The make/model was Lite-On eTDU108 External Slim DVD Drive. It was the only drive that Wal-Mart had, so I had to go with it.
Also note that when I called Korg support, they said that a non USB powered drive was recommended, but they didn't say required. It was $40 in walmart.

Just a thought: aren't there programmes, that can format usb sticks to bootable items? Like Ghost? Is it possible to fool the Kronos to believe it's reading from a dvd-drive although you're using a usb stick. My Kronos is in the repair shop so I can't experiment myself.

If your DVD drive is port powered and you wanted to be "safe", you could connect it to a powered USB hub which is then connected to the Kronos. Then the hub is supplying the port power rather than the Kronos.

One works -another doesn't

I purchased two USB Drives from Micro Center to see if they worked with the Kronos for boot up and restore.
Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS on sale for $32.99 - Recommended
This drive works perfectly with only one USB port connected. I tried it twice to be sure the operation was reliable. The specs state that this drive uses up to 1.4A, and supports both the Atom processor and LINUX.
LG GP10NB20 Super MultiDrive on sale for $34.99 - Will NOT work
This drive powers up and appears to read the disc, but when the Kronos red bar advances about 1 inch a message appears, System Startup Failure. Plugging into both ports had no effect. A second trial gave the same result.
Anyone who has a Kronos should consider getting the Samsung Drive. It is readily available and works great with the Kronos. It is also available from Amazon for $29.99 with free shipping.

Was it necessary to load the included software driver?

Lou asked "Was it necessary to load the included software driver"
Answer - You simply plug the cable into the Kronos and turn it on after putting the Kronos Restore Disc (DVD #1) in the USB Drive. The drive must be powered (plugged in) to open the drawer and load the disc. This can either be done using the Kronos, or by plugging it into any USB source that supplies power to the drive. If it is done on the Kronos, you must then turn off the Kronos and wait more than 10 seconds. When you turn it back on, it boots from the USB DVD drive and the Restore Menu appears automatically.

Actually Korg should let this work to via a USB thumdrive iso DVD player.

Here is the manual for the Samsung SE-208AB USB DVD Writer that works properly with the Kronos using the Restore DVDs.
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conte ... 8AB_EN.pdf
Go to page 7 for the system requirements. Here you will find important data that is not included in the specification, although it is written on the box.

Did you get the message "Installation Completed" after doing Format and Full Install? Did it respond with "Reauthorization Required? Did you try "Full Install" first as suggested in the Instructions? Please re-read the Instructions carefully.
https://www.korg.com/uploads/Support/KR ... 550000.pdf
If you have followed the instructions and have gotten the message "Installation Completed" you may need warranty service. I am very sorry you are having these problems. I am a new Kronos owner. Perhaps some more experienced owners will have some additional ideas.
