multiple effects on one channel...?

Reading the manual still makes my head hurt. If it can be done, I cannot locate it in the book or the terminology escapes me.
I've posted about this before in 2009 with no answers so maybe it's time to try again...;>)
If I try & assign another effect to a channel, the original effect # changes.
For instance, I'd like to use an internal amp distortion model with a noise gate & stereo chorus.
Please advise!
