Like the title suggests is there a soft synth that sounds as good or better then the Kronos pianos? I ask because I truly have no clue where to start![/url]

As always it's a matter of personal taste.
Try Pianoteq.

Pianoteq responds in the widest dynamic range and sounds natural like a real piano. It's based on physical modelling and besides various piano variants it features also other instruments such as electric pianos and vibraphones.
There are different versions (Play, Standard and Pro) available. Unless you want to tweak hammer hardness, length of the soundboard and mic positions, the "Play" version is all you need.
IMO the benefit compared with a sample-based piano is the wider dynamic range, lower CPU and memory footprints and better playability.
Just give it a try.
