Controlling an external rack mount synth

I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I'm new to Korg and don't quite understand their midi system. I have a Roland JV1080 I'd like to control with the Kronos. By default, the Kronos is always sending out midi note on/offs...not sure which channel...global I guess. Is there a way to have the Kronos ONLY send out midi info to the JV from within a Combi that I have programmed? I've been able to bank select and program change within a Combi...and then control the volume from the Combi timbre/track sliders. But...there always remains a signal being sent that I have to turn down from the EXT button and then the master slider. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but this Korg stuff stymies me!
Ultimately, I'd like the Kronos to NOT play the JV when I change Programs or Combis UNLESS I've programmed the particular Combi to play it.
Thanks
John

the easy answer I can give you for this problem (since you are new to midi) is to make sure the global midi channel for the Kronos is NOT the same as the global receive channel of the jv 1080.
i hope this helps. like I said, it's a short short answer, but it should get you on your way....
let me know if it helps and if you need other answers.

Thanks apex,
I see you have a JV5080 so are familiar with Roland. My 1080 is set to Performance and I've never had problems with other controllers always sending out on a global channel but I'll look into the Roland.
Do you know if there's a way to stop the Kronos from sending out midi unless you specifically put it in a combi?

Other than what I suggested...not at the moment.

Ok, thanks. Maybe I'll just tell the JV not to receive channel 1 since I'm pretty sure that's what the Kronos is sending out. Then I'll just get specific in my combis as to what other channel to transmit to the Roland. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Hi John
I hope I can piggy back on your new found knowledge!
I've just hooked up my Kronos 73 to my Roland Fantom XR.
I want to use Setlist Mode on the Kronos and select Performances on the XR.
The Kronos is set to Global Channel 3.
The XR is set to Patch Mode Receive channel 3 with Performance Channel 16.
The Fantom will play whatever is sent on MIDI Channel 3 but it won't respond to Performance Changes.
Can you tell me how you got it to respond to Bank/Program changes from a combi?
Thanks!
R

Take a look at the EXT/EX2 settings for a combi timbre.

I have.
I can't get the Fantom to change Performances.
The Program within a Performance changes but not the Performance itself.

Don't know if this is any help, but for my Motif rack I have to send 2 cc messages for it to change in performance mode Lsb then Msb, for the motif rack it is 63 and 68.
You will have to find out, from your manual or on the Roland Forum, what the cc numbers are that your Fantom responds to and put them in the bank fields on the Kronos

Man....the post got hijacked!
Hey Alan...can't really help at this point. So far, I'm just trying to keep the one Performance running on the JV and select different programs from within it.
I'll run down a step by step on how I was able to do it within the combi after a while...I'll be busy for a few hours and I need to be next to the Kronos as I type so I don't steer you wrong.
I'll finish this later.

Apex....I got it taken care of by telling the JV not to receive on the Kronos' global channel 1. Then, within a combi, I select the program change on a different one. One more quick question...when I save the combi, everytime I come back to it, the volume to the rack mount is not where I left it....I always have to turn it down via the slider. I get a nice mix, save it...but then lose it when I recall the combi. Any ideas?

this is a weird one, but kinda makes sense....
the combi is calling the correct patches... I think it should call the volume too (cc07), but maybe its not..
two things I would check first are:
make sure the jv is set to receive cc07 (this is probably NOT the answer, but I thought about it, so I figured I'd share... maybe it will work)
next thing, it may just be a matter of the performance/patch on the JV itself. You may need to save the volume ON THE JV as well. patches in my XV have individual volumes that are saved PER PATCH, PER PERFORMANCE. On the XV its in the COMMON-> GENERAL menu. It's called level. This is in patch mode and of course I'm sure you know how to change volumes of individual patches within a performance. (it's also called Level)
Save the volume there and this should fix the problem. Try the other thing too, just in case, but I don't think it will help.
I hope this

Will do...thanks for the input. I know the JV is receiving volume info since I adjust it on the fly...just weird that the Kronos doesn't send out the volume setting when you call up the combi.
