Kronos as Audio Interface for iPad

Post by Qtipcore »

I've just bought the Camera Connection Kit for the iPad today, and hooked the iPad up to the Kronos just for fun.

I knew that Midi would work, but as it turns out audio just works as well!

How cool is that?! 8)

Confirmed that it is working as audio output with Korg iMS-20, iElectribe, MorpWiz, AniMoog -So output seems to work for all applications.

Audio input is also working so that you can record the Kronos Audio digitally directly into the iPad. Tested with Garageband. And Filtatron - Beware of feedbacks:-)

I haven't had time to test the external inputs on the Kronos, but I guess that will work as well. :D

Edit: I've tested recording from the external input to the iPad. It works. :o

and to think I've been just running my iPad into the auto inputs or my line mixer. This is pretty cool.

I've been using one of these to charge my iPad while using the camera connection kit. Should work swimmingly w/ the Kronos.

Great find. I love playing the iPad with Animoog and lots of other programs. Even Garage Band is terrific for all sorts of stuff.

This opens up all sorts of possibilities.

I had previously just used the iPad headphone output into the Kronos line ins.

That sounds pretty good BTW.

Could you clarify exactly what you purchased, including what cables?

Looking on the Apple Store and the Camera Connection Kit shows just a samll white device with no cables. How did you hook the Camera Conneciton Kit up to the Kronos exactly?

Could you also (briefly!) describe if/how the Audio and MIDI ports are seen and configured on both the iPad and the Kronos end?

Can this kit be used to connect an iPad via and Audio and MIDI to a computer?

Thanks,
Kevin.

This is a GREAT find! I never knew they made these. Charge your iPad AND use the USB port? I love it!

Can you also use a USB hub on it?

Sina
No, it's for charging only. I use a mini USB cable and the same sort of USB/AC power brick that I charge my cellphone with. I've found that the iPad itself is fairly finicky about what sort of of devices will work via the camera kit at all, let alone multiple ones. It's not a PC, so don't expect it to act like one and allow you to daisy chain 127 devices off that one port thing. If you haven't bought the camera kit, I'd suggest getting the Apple one and steering clear of some of the 3rd party ones. I had to go through 2 "generic" ones before giving up and plunking down the $30 for the Apple one. The generic ones would constantly disconnect and reconnect or give me a "usb device not supported" error when I plugged them in.

What USB plug does this require? The iPad Camera Kit has the flat male type output usb plug so which type goes 'into' the Kronos? Should I use the USB port that connects to the PC? The rectangular one that is.

I'd imagine that's the only way to send and receive audio...

Sorry, I'm confused - you wrote:

Why would a mini usb cable be required? The iPad usb on the Camera Kit is normal size - same on the Kronos?

@Kevin Nolan:

I use an ordinary USB A to USB B cable that you would use for connecting the Kronos to an ordinary PC. Ie tha iPad is the PC in this scenario.

The Camera connection kit (CCK) consists of two "dongles", one with a SD card reader (Don't use this with the Kronos  ) and one with a regular USB port (This is the one to use)

The Audio output seems to be automapped when you connect the CCK and Kronos via USB. The MIDI ports differ somewhat - In aniMoog, you can choose which MIDI input to use - In Garageband it automatically works, so I guess it depends on the settings of the app.

I don't think the CCK can be used to connect an iPad to a PC in the same way..

Now the only thing I'm missing is MIDI support in http://www.forscoreapp.com/ so that when changing score sheets, and bookmarks the app would also send Program Change to the Kronos and choose the corresponding Set List slot.

THAT would be sweet!

Edit:typo...

Sonicstate.com had a recent review (their iPad Show - video - sorry no exact link) where they showed some app that will do what you require - I hope.
