HELP!! M3 + Firebox + Cubase+ M3 Editor

I am using usb->midi and have my mono line out from the M3 going into the line in into the Firebox.
The midi notes get recorded into cubase and if I hook up some headphones to the M3 I can hear the recorded notes.
I want to be able to get the sound from the M3 recorded into cubase via midi.
If I put the lines from the M3 into the Mic/Instr input of the Firebox I can record it in audio format but it will be much harder to edit/quantize the notes.
Is there a way to record via midi into cubase without using the M3 FW option?
Thank you in advance.

Good, you are getting further than many others struggling to get MIDI recorded from M3 to Cubase

No way, MIDI does not carry any sound. Cubase records/plays back MIDI over USB in your configuration and M3 makes sound. You need to capture sound from M3 and record it on separate track in Cubase or any other DAW.

Why then?

You need to get audio from M3 to computer - FW-EXB does it digitally - or in analog way: M3 Stereo out -> soundcard audio in

Thank you for your response your explanation made a lot of sense helped out alot
So it I were to buy a the EXB-FW card for the M3 and use that instead of going through the MIDI and the Audio inputs, would that allow me to do what I'm trying to do?

I am not quite sure what exactly you want and try

But FW-EXB allows you
1) Send/receive MIDI (you can also use USB for MIDI if you want and sometimes it is even better way to leave FW only for Audio)
2) Send up to 6 Audio channels digitally from M3 to your computer (L/R and Out 1-4) - Basically for recording your M3 performance in computer DAW
3) Get back 2 Audio channels from computer to M3 (Audio in 1/2) - for monitoring or other purposes
So basically it saves extra audio card for your computer and you can get M3 Audio strait and digitally to your computer for recording. Be aware that some latency issues may be related with EXB-FW, search forums for that.

Well what I would like to do is record the M3 sounds via midi. So I would choose a sounds from the M3 editor and record into a midi track as I would any VST instrument. So that I could see the individual notes instead of the sound being recorded in an audio format.
What I got from your last response is that if I use the USB->MIDI I would need to create a separate audio track to record the sound coming from the M3.
I would like to bypass that step and create one MIDI track, record into it so that it will have the notes as well as the sound in the same track MIDI track.
If that makes any sense.

So does that mean I would still have to use a separate audio channel to record the sound from the M3?

Learn this

: M3 produces your audio, you need "audio channel" (get audio from M3 to computer) in one or another way if you want to record audio.

I got your question and what you're trying to achieve.
Basically you want to record some midi into Cubase, and then use this midi track to send it to your M3, let it play the midi track and record the audio using a Line.
Thats what he meant by "record using midi".
This is achieved by plugging your Midi both using Midi, and Direct line into your computer ( it can be using usb Midi, midi cable to midi box, or any Midi way) as for the Direct line, just plug the M3 into your firebox and make sure you can record regular audio while playing your M3.
Now record your Midi in cubase, and in the Midi settings of that specific track, set the Out instrument to the M3, just like a Vst instrument, you get to specify to send that midi track back to the M3 which will obviously play the track you have once you press Play.
Now that this is working you simply have to add a new audio track and press Record, the Midi track will be routed to the M3 which will "automatically" play the sound and will record the Midi track just as if you were the one playing your M3.
hope that was clear enough.
