Demo: Freaky Experiments With The Drumtrack QR

There's been some discussion lately of how you can route things in the Kronos to get interesting sounds. So i've thought, let's do something you never heard before on the Kronos. I've recorded a session where i show some really freaky stuff when i route the drumtrack through one of the synthengines.
I'm showing things like: drumtrack sound mangling with FM / Waveshaping / String Modelling and Filter modifications.
This is also possible with sounds from another EXI but here i'm having fun with three examples where i route the Drum track to the:
- MOD-7
- STR-1
- MS-20
Just watch the video and see what kind of things are possible when you route and patch things in the engine. Everything is done in realtime and you see every step of how to achieve that kind of sounds.
So although it's not a real tutorial, you can see how it's done and you could reproduce the steps i do on screen to try it out yourself.
Here it is
(if you want to read the screens watch it in full screen and 1080P quality (HQ) on youtube on my channel)

Qui, that's interesting and informative. It'll be a while before I'm happy with all the routing on the K, simply because of time constraints (and a tired brain!), but I'm really looking forward to playing around with this. Thanks for the snippet. Let us see if you find something very special.

thanks!
because of the length of the video i only could show the MOD-7 in depth, and the STR-1 and MS20 just on a basic level. But if you are going to experiment with this then the STR-1 is absolutely fantastic when you want to create ambient drones and programs.
I've didn't really get indepth with the STR-1 because i already have so many ambient type of movies on my channel, that's why i recorded the harder FM / Waveshaping possibilities or this video. But most of the time i use this feature with the STR-1.
For instance i have this STR-1 program that i use in one of my own tracks where the drum track creates a rythmic pattern in the String modulation sound, where i set Envelopes so that the string behaves like a pad sound. The string modelling is done with the help of AMS sources and the Vector automatition is used for specific parameters. You can get really interesting sounds if you do those kind of things.
For dance style the MS20 can be quite interesting as soon as you create interesting patch routings on the Patch panel.
What i tried to show in this video that there is so much synth power available in a Kronos and that it can do so much more then just the standard piano or bread and butter sounds.
It's a big playground for people that are interested in synthesizers. Korg did an outstanding job by giving access to 9 synthengines and even a better job that you can use them together in one program.
Everyday i'm stunned by what is possible in the Kronos. And i really have a lot of synths in my studio, but none of them comes close to what a Kronos can do.
Impressive machine!

That was awesome.....
When it will be possible to do that from any mode 9n KRONOS..... I shall buy it. I want to do that from sequencer to record those tweaks..

Loved the strumming kinda stuff with STR1. I will have to have a play with these techniques

this is already possible in any mode. for instance in the video at 3.00 minutes you hear the filters changing when i select the ifx 11 for the drumtrack, this is done through the knobs on the kronos which you can record in the sequencer.
also the on and off settings for the original drumtrack could be programmed by assigning a switch (SW1) to the insert fx so that you hear or don't hear the extra original drums in combination with the routed signal.
It's just a matter of assigning the correct knobs / sliders / switches or any CC to the functions you want to record.
The only reason i'm doing it on screen now is to show how people could do it when they want to try it theirselves. Normally i would do everything with the knobs / faders and switches on the control surface on the Kronos.

Wow, great stuff, man! I said it a thousand times, but these kind of tweaks makes me wish so much if we could do this at the PROG level inside a COMBI, so you can hear your edits along other MIDI tracks. That would really give the Kronos the versatility that you get when using VSTs/AUs inside a DAW, but with the great sounds of the K. Anyway, great stuff M. Robinez!! You've just put my mind on fire

You can do most tweaks from Tone Adjust. There is just no GUI. But you can choose more than 16 parameters (which should be enough) from a program to override and/or automate.
But once you have a basic audio-in program set up for a specific engine, just use that in your program or combi and go from there.

Hey X-Trade,
Unfortunately, 16 parameters isn't nearly close to the kind of tweaks i'm talking about!! And the 16 slots selection doesn't include a lot of parameter destination. If, for example, a PROG uses frequency as the base for one of its LFO speed and i want it to be BPM-based, i don't think i can do that from the T Ajust selection... or change the LFO shape. See what i mean? But thanks anyway to suggest the T. Ajust feature.
