Hi guys,
As I'm getting used to my new M50, I'm also exploring new combis, for e.g. the Vintage Pro keys found in this forum http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=41540, as well as the ones by korgmann at
http://korgpatches.com/patches/m50/cust ... s_korgmann.

So the obvious newbie question here is... if I load these programs and combis from my SD card, they would overwrite the pre-loaded programs/combis. Is there anyway to get them back? So I read the user manual, and there is a section which says the following...

Loading the preloaded data
The original preload data is backed up in the M50, so
you can restore any or all of the Programs,
Combinations, Drum Kits, User Arpeggio Patterns,
and Global settings to their original factory settings.
The original demo songs can also be re-loaded at any
time. For details, please see “About the data loaded by
All Preload PCG.”

While this sounds promising, I would just like to check with others. Anyone had any problems with lost programs/combis when loading from SD cards?
And...if I would like to take a backup of all the pre-loaded programs/combis, user arpeggios & drum patterns is it enough to save it as a .PCG on my SD card?

Yes, you can save a PCG backup, which is worthwhile if you've edited anything or if you have it 2nd hand and don't know if anything has been changed.

PCG also contains Global settings, so if you've changed anything in there it is handy to save a backup. A PCG file is all you need.

But as it says, you can restore any of the factory presets using the restore option available from the menu within Global mode.

When you load some else's PCG it is recommended you don't load the whole PCG but instead use 'open', navigate within the PCG, and load the parts that you want. You can load individual programs, combis, or banks to any location.

Keep in mind also though that combis will look for programs in specific locations, so if A23 is a piano usually and you've loaded a flute into there, then any combi which is expecting a piano in that location will now have a flute, and may sound weird, or at least not as intended! So if you have a PCG with both combis and program's, you may want to load the programs to their default locations as they are saved within the PCG

You also can use PCG Tools if you want to extensively changing PCG files (or copy programs/combis from one PCG file to another).

Also follow the link in my signature, there is a manual, if you download it read chapter 4; it explains the relations between programs and combis and structure of a PCG file.

This sounds interesting. That way I can move new programs and combis to locations that I know are not being used currently. Thanks for the tip, I'll send you a PM for getting this.

michel, just to clarify - I downloaded Korgmann's app - so with PCG tools, I can go through each file and copy it to say the "D" bank? Or must PCG files be copied to a Program bank? I'm new to the M50 so forgive my ignorance.

I just sent the app to you. Enjoy! Yes, you can find out which programs are being used or not (by which combis). You also can copy them from one to another file.

PCG Tools is a windows application. You load both your own and the Korgmann's great PCG file. Then you can copy programs/combis from Korgmann's PCG file to your own PCG file.

Always make a backup because there is no undo/redo function.
