LAN versus USB.

I am not a computer expert, so I was wondering what is the advantage of having the Kronos conected to a computer via LAN, instead of USB. Is it just speed, or is there more to be gained connecting with LAN? Sorry for the perhaps silly question, but at the moment I don't feel the need using LAN, except maybe when it would be WLAN (no external cable needed).

One possible advantage is that you could access the Kronos from multiple computers on your network without replugging.

But the main reason is that it would have been much harder for Korg to get the USB to work, since it's basically a regular computer inside - ever tried hooking up a computer's usb port directly to another one's? The LAN port was already there so they decided to go with that.

Ok thanks, understood. But what is a bit strange is that they didn't install a LAN port on the Kronos casing. Now you (officially) have to connect LAN through one of the USB ports, using an external LAN connector, loosing a USB port in the process. That is, if I'm correct.

Correct, sadly. I think the FTP/LAN connectivity was an afterthought. The ethernet port on the motherboard is apparently actually working (according to another forum member), they just didn't put it in the casing.

This is correct. I confirmed this out of curiosity when doing the SSD install.

The Kronos recognizes connections to the Internal port instantly and with NO issues or configuration needed whatsoever.

My bet is this is for security as the LAN port probably gives more direct access to the hardware. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an extra layer of security on the USB to help deter would be "Hackers". Then again, they could have possibly just felt "why cut another hole in the case and spend money on a jack many won't use? We'll route through USB and pass that cost onto those who want it". Obviously only Korg knows the real answer!

Overall having the LAN connection is about the best thing to happen to a keyboard in my opinion. Being able to quickly load files, delete files, rename, move from my computer instead of touch screens and usb stick is a huge productivity boost.

Probably side-thread worthy, but in the cases where folks have put wlan trancievers in their rigs, I'm curious about noise/interference.

Even without wlan I've had cases where I've had to have my ethernet runs stay away from audio cables for that matter since it's all UTP Cat 5e/6 (unshielded twisted pair). I can't imagine an ethernet run or WLAN device inside shielding specificly engineered to keep that junk out would be good.
