Anyone translated the Songbook Titles to their English Names

Post by Pfeff »

Hi,

I can't seem to find if this has been done. Search brings references to the songbook but not this specific question. Frankly, listing the songs with such poor translations devalues the abilities of this instrument.

I've been gradually working my way through the list correcting them but when I got to Smooth workman tonight realizing this should be Smooth Operator, it is no longer funny, just laborious trying to work them out.

If someone has worked out the list, they might want to post it here or make available for download to the forum.

If already done, can someone point me in the right direction please?
Cheers,
John

KORG can not use the original titles - that would be copyright infringement pretty much everywhere in the world.

Hey mate. I'm pretty certain they have done that to avoid copyright violation of names or something along those lines. Hence the funny names.

As for a deciphered version, i'm petty sure there was one floating around, cannot remember where ive seen it. Quick search through forums revealed not much.

Thanks guys, I hadn't considered copyright mainly because the Song Finder function in my T4 has over 1500 titles and most seem to be actual titles and those that do vary are much less cryptic.

I must say that although I'm no copyright expert, I'd be a little surprised if this is the case. After all, copyright is more concerned with the performance or reprinting of the copyrighted material. EDIT follows: I did a quick search on song titles and copyright and most jurisdictions seem to exclude song titles as they don't qualify as original literary work due to the shortness of the word, words or phrases.

I think the issue is more likely the relatively short number of letters available for a song title to be used. The T4 seems to be adequate for most songs by comparison. Don't get me wrong, I am playing the Pa much more than the T4 and likely to sell it soon.

Anyway, the fact remains, the list is stupidly cryptic and not in line with the rest of the keyboard. I shall continue to translate them as I get time and the ones I am adding will be closer to the original.

If anyone can point me to that list would be nice. I haven't found it with a search either.

Edited to add copyright exclusion of song titles. Pfeff.

John

This has always puzzled me.
I do not believe that there is any copyright on a song title especially considering the number of different songs out there with the same title.

I reckon it is a little paranoia (probably justified in this stupid world of ridiculous laws) - I notice Yamaha do exactly the same

So - a question - if we all work out the exact song titles for the SONGBOOK and change them then I guess we are all breaching copyright???
Just doesn't make sense

I think that Korg know there probably would be no ramifications even if they did use real names. But instead of spending resources and $ on their legal team making sure that it doesn't happen or drawing up some sort of fineprint, they simply chose not to use real names. Just to be absolutely sure.

To twist Karmas previous worlds a little bit. We live in a world where a lot of stupid people take others and companies to court for very stupid things.
Korg may just be a bit cautious as to how they display some of their material. And yes, even if they are only just names.
Just my thoughts.

If this were the case, i'd be in serious s***. Most my performances and M3 combis are actual song and artist names.

Yamaha allows downloading the Music Finder database with real song names:

http://services.music.yamaha.com/musicfinder/

So Korg can do the same thing, provide the songbook with real song names as a downloadable file. It's really frustrating searching through all that crazy names that many of the times mean nothing to me...

Precisely!

I did quite a bit of research and song titles cannot be protected by copyright. Some countries like Australia expressly mention this in their law fact sheets.

There is a case between Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Fox over the title Californication at the moment but that is not about reprinting the word but Fox's use for their TV show. But the defence claims that it was not trademarked. And therein lies the difference.

As so many songs use the same title, it cannot be considered exclusive or intellectual property, thus free from copyright infringements.

So all we now need is to fix this dumb list and share. I've started and happy to post the ones I've changed. But some are just too cryptic for me to work out yet.
Cheers,
John
