hey guys I've been getting kinda confused as to how games that konami makes like those of the gradius series have such thick leads. I've tried using my microkorg and my R3 and have had no luck getting their sort of "funky treble leads"

Re: Fm synth leads
Might want to acquire an FM synth- Korg's VPM is a bit wonk. DX7s and their derivatives are fairly cheap nowadays.
Otherwise, experiment with VPM amount modulated by envelopes and keytracking.
