Restoring factory settings

Restoring factory settings
I purchased a used Kronos 73 key from Guitar Center and they will be shipping it out for me to pick up at my local store in the next few days. My first thought was that I should run the OS update to 2.0.6 and do a factory restore. In reading over the “Updating and restoring the KRONOS” document, it looks like I will need the two factory disks that came with the keyboard originally. In speaking with the sales guy, it looks like they did not receive the original manuals or factory disks so I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to do a factory restore. Any advice on the best way for me to do a factory restore would be appreciated.
Thanks

So, no disks, no live!
So, no disks, no live!

The only reason I wanted to restore to factory settings is in case the previous owner made any significant changes to the board. I thought it would be best to start fresh.
In reading over things, it seems a bit dangerous. I don’t want to break it before I even get started. If he made change to any of the sounds or global settings, that might impact the functionality for me.
Is it possible to purchase the original disks from Korg or a different source?

Sharp has made copies of mine, not sure how far he got, but was looking at uploading them to this site, mine are version 2.02.
I THINK the Kronos PC editor comes with the default PCG file so if I'm right, you could simply load up the editor, the included PCG, follow the editors instructions to send all to your Kronos, save all on your Kronos and all your settings should be as it was when it was new.

unless the previous owner has completely removed the files form the disc drive you an easily reload the factory settings. Alchemist tells you exactly how to do this form your Kronos.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!

"Restoring the original sounds
You can easily restore the Programs, Combinations, Drum Kits, Wave Sequences, Set Lists, and EXs samples to their original state as shipped from the factory. This is done by loading the PRELOAD.PCG file, which is included both on Accessory Disk 2 and the internal disk."
From the Owners Manual page 275.
Korg may send the file to you, try contacting service. (if you can't find it on the drive.
Installing the latest OS (2.0.6) which can be download from korg and the restoring the original sounds and your Kronos should be just like new.
PS. seems you may have to run the OS update twice, to get everything to work.
Good luck

Last but not least: if or when, in your ownership, will have the need of restoring, you will need "a dvd drive that works with the Kronos"! (which you nor the rest has mentioned, so i suspect you only bought a Kronos, without discs or compatible dvd player!)
Here http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... ing+kronos and with a search you can obtain more info about the matter, but you will need one tested and actually working, cause without it, by a crash, you wont be able to restore anything.
Simple but effective

First off, thanks for all the help:
I will provide some background as to my purchase because to be honest this keyboard is starting to sound complicated to me:
First let me state that I consider myself a novice with it comes to these modern keyboards. I currently have a Triton Extreme 88 key and I only use about 10% of its functions. I do play in a band and we play gigs 5 or 6 times a year. The rest of the time, I just play around in a small extra bedroom with my son’s drums and a few amps and guitars. The size and weight of my current keyboard has been a problem at times at smaller venues. When I first saw the Kronos, I really liked the fact that the 73 key model had weighted keys. I found a used one at a Guitar Center in a different state. Because they have such a generous return policy, I purchased it sight unseen. At the time, I have no idea how important having the original disks were. My first thought was that I should restore it back to as close to how it was shipped from the factory before I start playing around with it. At this point, based on all of the posts I have read, I’m concerned that I might be in over my head as far as how complicated this keyboard seems to be.
Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark this forum is here to help people and the info in it is humongous
...
I'm no pro either (actually you are more than i am, talking about gigs ..)
This is a mighty machine, little scary at first, but thanks to different prominent members here, made somewhat simpler for the beginner to understand with tips, videos and sounds.
9 different engines for someone with little understanding of synthesis are a killer and i'm not saying this about you, don't get me wrong, but the sound is rewarding!!.
Like any other workstation it has his +'s and -'s.
Tip: check the key bed (if you are a good player) for the reaction and good working of the keys as different models (mostly 73/88 keys) had some flaws in the beginning!.
For the rest, almost everything you want to know is in these pages on this forum and enough people with enough knowledge to help you out.
I haven't used the discs yet and probably you'll not need them soon too but if needed... you better have them!
Hope you'll enjoy more than fear the new keys
cheers

I still have not received the keyboard yet from GS.AlchemistMusicStudio wrote:You can easily restore the Programs, Combinations (ect) to their original state as shipped from the factory. This is done by loading the PRELOAD.PCG file, which is included both on Accessory Disk 2 and the internal disk.
Other than editing the Programs and Combinations, what other things might the previous owner have made changes to? Based on my Triton Extreme, I know that you can make changes to the Global settings. Things like Key Transpose, Velocity Curve & After Touch. Is there an easy was to reset these things as well. Also, it looks like it’s possible for the previous owner to have saved a bunch of samples to the hard drive. Will running the Preload.pcg from the hard drive remove all of the previous owners saved data?
The Kronos is shipped with the velocity curve set at 4 by default so that's easy for you to set (although as I play a lot of piano, I personally prefer 9)
The http://www.korg.com/uploads/Support/USA ... ide_E5.pdf tells you this on page 158
The same page also says the default after touch curve is 3.
On the global settings screen, the drop down menu also has after touch calibration along with screen calibration, half pedal calibration, so you can tailor the kronos to your own touch.
To try and put your mind at rest, I've just done the following.
As I have my system fully backed up, I've deleted ALL files from my SSD, it's completely empty.
I've now re-installed everything from the DVD's, I have the 2.0.2 DVDs
This took about 30 mins although I simply left it going, came back after a while and it was asking for DVD 2, so I don't know how long it actually took.
After rebooting, I've looked at the SSD and I have two directories.
FACTORY and Korg Options
Korg Options is only there on the X version and has the various Korg demo files available for you to try/buy so that wont be there on yours, but for completeness, contains
FACTORY contains the following
EXs_Extra contains
PRELOAD.KGE contains the directory GEs
GEs contains the directory Bank U-A
Bank U-A contains too much stuff to list
PRELOAD.KSC contains the following directories
EXs1, Exs5 contains two directories, Multisamples and Drumsamples
EXs3, Exs4, Exs6, Exs7 Contain one directory, Multisamples
Exs8 and EXs9 contain one directory, Drumsamples
There's no EXs2 in the PRELOAD.KSC directory
All of the above multisamples directories etc contain too much stuff to list
PRELOAD.PCG contains
and as you can imagine, they contain too much stuff to list except for Global Settings which is a single file, not a directory
PRELOAD.SNG contains
PRELOAD_A contains
PRELOAD_Individual_KSC contains
And each of them contains the relevant stuff listed earlier, just each one is in their own file
And that is all the directories on the SSD (obviously the above listed directories may have numerous directories inside them)
If I go to the Global page, haven't altered a thing since reinstalling
On the KSC Auto-Load Tab, ONLY PRELOAD.KSC is ticked
On the MIDI Tab
That should make yours identical to getting it from the factory
best
Joe

Well, I picked up my Kronos two nights ago and got it home only to find that about 10 of the keys were broken. The box showed no signs of damage. The box must have been dropped or something. The keys were part way depressed and if you played them they had no spring action and would not return back up. You could hear small broken parts inside if you moved or turned the board. Guitar Center gave me a full refund and apologized. I should have opened the box in the store and inspected the board because it would have saved me the trip back.
Anyway, I’m not sure what I’m going to do now as the 73 key Kronos is hard to find. I may just stick with my Triton Extreme 88 key. It’s a shame because other than that, the board looked like new with absolutely no marks.
Thanks for all the help
Mark
