Ideal MIDI setup (EA1, KP3, and miniBrute)

Post by roblabs »

I'm trying to find the ideal midi setup between an EA1 (has MIDI In, Out, and Thru), KP3 (In and Out), and an Arturia miniBrute (in and out).

What I'm doing is using the Electribe to sequence the minibrute (ea1 out to mini In), but I'd also like to simultaneously have the minibrute's Out going back in to the EA1 so that I can record notes on the fly using the minibrute keyboard (much more ideal than the small electribe buttons). All well and good, as I have the EA1 as the master with the clock set to internal.

But now, I'd like to sync the KP3 with this setup, but the problem is that the minibrute unfortunately has no midi thru. Any ways around this? or will this just not work without another THRU port?

This really irks me cos it makes me realize how useful THRU is, and how smart KORG was by incorporating it into all of their Electribes. Now, on a separate note, its a bit of a shame that the new Volcas don't have all 3 midi ports....almost like a downgrade!

THRU is indeed a great feature that can be a sore omission on some gear. What you may have to do if your local shop can order it, is to bite the bullet and buy something like Midi Solutions Quadra Thru which splits one source's output into several. Hook this to the heart of your MIDI setup and it opens up a lot of possibilities.

This sounds like a bad idea to me--and I'm not even sure it's feasible--but since you're already bringing the brute's out to the EA's in, you might wanna see if you can route the EA's Thru to your KP3 so the clock continues through. Try it out but don't sue me if it does nothing :)
