Can't load wav.s from SM card to ES-1

After transferring 16/44.1 mono wav files from my Mac to a 64 MB Smart Media card I am unable to load them into my ES-1 (MK 1). I have never attempted this before, always having used samples made with the ES-1, but I am following the manual carefully.
The same card allows loading and saving of ES samples but just to be certain I reformatted the SM card yet with no luck. I continue to receive the Er. 8 message (unrecognized file.) I should add that I tried this originally with aiffs.
