Combinations and External MIDI

Hello all.
Ran into a perplexing combination external midi situation with the old Triton Studio.
I want to control multiple external MIDI devices, all on separate channels from within a combo. I set up some of the 8 available slots to ext and it at first appears to work just fine. Once I go over 2 slots set to external one of the slots appears to stop transmitting MIDI on it's assigned channel.
Even more strangely, if I go into global mode and change the "Global" midi channel the voices which sound will swap around although there are only ever 2, although they will be a different 2.
All connections are fine because I can jump into sequence mode and play the external devices on separate channels/tracks there just fine.
I feel like I'm missing something here. Anyone else run into this?
