Backup/Upgrade from OS 1.0.3 to current

Hi all,
I'm just starting to use my Triton classic seriously again, and I realized that I've never upgraded the operating system. It still has version 1.0.3; I see the latest is 2.53, and the oldest upgrade listed on the support page is 2.0.
I would like to upgrade to the latest version, but first it seems wise to backup all of my sequences/samples/etc. I'd like to backup to an external USB HD, but I have not been able to find a backup option in the disk menu, in the manuals, or through internet searching, and the Triton of course only has a SCSI port and no USB port.
So given this situation, I have the following questions:
1. How do I perform the backup in OS version 1.0.3?
2. Would using a SCSI to USB adapter with the external USB HD work as easily as it seems like it ought to?
3. Can I upgrade directly from 1.0.3 to 2.53, or do I have to upgrade some or all of the intermediary versions to get there?
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this.
