Hey guys, I'm trying to set up my Kronos to work with Sonar X2, and I Really need some help. I'm looking to record via USB audio (analog just creates too mush hissing), and to record MIDI via USB in Sonar as well. I'm not new to working with DAWs, but I'm having one Heck of a time with this, and I'm getting super frustrated.

Does anyone know of a guide, or an article, or a help file, or Anything that can walk me through this? Many thanks in advance!

Most important thing first - we will get you there - Kronos and Sonar work together fine.

Let's start with the general setup. What do you mean by USB? Plug-In the USB port from Kronos to a USB port of your PC?

You seem to want the Kronos Audio recorded in Sonar.

My setup is as follows and provides best quality. I have the Kronos connected via the USB for midi only. The Kronos audio is routed via the digital outputs to my digital audio interface and Sonar receives the audio directly from there. Alternatively I could also use the analogue lines, which are very good and, good cabling provided, can also be connected to a dedicated digital audio interface.

If you are going digitally you have only to consider that you need a master clock and Sonar and Kronos listen to it - as slaves. This master clock is often available from the digital interface and its driver.

Anyway you have to consider that Kronos is operating at a sampling frequency of 48kHz. The entire audio chain has to be made compliant. You can set up Sonar and your audio interface accordingly for sure.

How to get Kronos, the interface, and Sonar working in this mode is described in the corresponding manuals. If this short description is too short, just ask again and be specific about your set-up and requirements.

The Kronos USB port supports both MIDI and audio, so it is possible to record your Kronos via its USB interface into Sonar. In Sonar, go "Preferences" and select MME32 as the audio driver. (ASIO is not supported and I've had issues using WDM.) Set 48/24 as the sampling rate and you should be ready to go. Just insert an audio track, select the Kronos as the input, arm the track and hit record.

My answer depends on what you call a controller for Sonar.

I use the Kronos as Midi-source and destination and audio-source for Sonar tracks, but not for controlling Sonar as a DAW.

For Midi-control of the DAW I use a Novation keyboard with "Automap". That is supported by one of the Sonar included "Controller Surfaces" and - more or less - a painless plug, set-up, and play process.

AFAIK there is no Kronos "controller surface" in the selection list, to get control of play/record/track-selection/channel strip control etc. But may be that somebody has generated such a template and you may find it in the internet.

The good news is, you can do it yourself. Sonar provides the "Cakewalk Generic Surface" to be used with an external controller, which not listed in the controller-surface preset list.

What you have to do is:
1) get the Generic Surface activated in Sonar as your control surface and set it's input to the Kronos Midi driver
2) now activate the Controller/Surface Parameter window,
3) fortunately there is a "learn" button
4) Step by step you can now set-up controll functions for each track
5) don't forget to save out your work as a template/preset after having finished the job.

I have never done this for the Kronos, but for other keyboards. It's only taking time and not complicated, provided that the midi-data of the keyboard are sent/received propper. But this should not be an issue

What you also can do is, just try one of the presets. May be, that the Kronos has some similarity with a Mackie controller or one of the others. I guess, you can not damage something just by trying.
