iPolysix Kaoss pads

Just bought Polysix for my Ipad Mini and overall am very pleased. I'm triggering via Novation SL49 and/or Akai LPK25. One thing I've noticed is in regards to the Kaoss pads in Polysix.
Pad 1 tends to be unresponsive when assigned to filter modulation. Sometimes it doesn't trigger unless I walk my finger across from the lower left and across to the right, diagonally.
Also, I'd expect to see Kaoss pad 2 be assignable as is 1 - having it hardwired to play scales is a bit of a surprise. Isn't the point to automate parameters or am I missing something?
