Need Advice

Post by singhor »

Hi Everyone, I just join to this forum. I've never used a KORG keyboard. So I would like to add a KORG instrument to my collection of musical instruments. I have used several yamaha PSR boards & Roland boards. Currently use Jupiter 80 & Yamaha PSR950.

Required application on KORG instrument. To play on Live shows using most of factory set acoustic tones & modified/customised acoustic & synth tones, One band shows with built in & custom styles & tones.

Suggested KORG keyboard should be able to:-

Should be the best board with latest technology & unique features of KORG

compatible with unlimited or large no.of acoustic & synth tones (classic, legacy) issued on various KORG boards, by loading or by play on USB

Able to tweak and layer tones to create new sounds, sampling would be optional

compatible with unlimited or large no.of KORG factory styles issued on various KORG boards, by loading or by play on USB

Able to create new styles

Analog synth modulation not necessary and I do not hope to compose music on a keyboard workstation.

I've studied on web about PA3x and KRONOS and I have few areas to clarify with a KORG expert. Which is,

Whether KRONOS is having styles too?
Whether PA3x sounds are equal quality of KRONOS (KORG flagship workstation)
Whether any of these boards will fulfil my above needs.

I humbly request KORG experts & pioneers to advice me on the above. Thank you.

Hi singhor,

As a new member here myself, let me say 'hi' -- hopefully someone has already welcomed you!

Your questions are pretty open-ended because you didn't mention that all-important constraint: how much you are willing to pay.

If you are mostly interested in using presets (patches, rhythms/accompanying styles) and playing with the style of the "band in a box" like an arranger/accompanist keyboard you may want to investigate the PA3X or the new Yamaha Tyros 5 (or even a used Tyros 4). Amazing breadth and depth of presets mentioned above; those styles have variations that can be copied from other styles and combined into a new style, and many many more are available for download from both Yamaha and Korg, and available on the various Yamaha/Korg forums. As much as I like Korg products, when comparing the Tyros5 to the PA3X I give the edge to Yamaha in terms of sound quality and ease of use.

Since you have the Jupiter 80, you have the latest and greatest from Roland; it doesn't look like they're going to do anything more in that vein other than support that current "one size fits all", which saddens many long-time Roland users like me.

As for the Kronos -- you might want to spend some time with it. It's the next logical evolution from their Triton/Karma/OASYS line, including nearly every type of Korg synthesis under one very sexy cover, with tons of preset patches, combis, and arps included and many more available online. The Kronos is oriented toward professional performance and studio work, and its software-based architecture, much like the Jupiter 80, makes a plausible insurance of non-obsolescence. I have to give Korg the edge here because IMO they have the best practical experience with successfully turning software into sound. Roland's Jupiter *looks* amazing, but doesn't have that "it's all in here" the Kronos does.

The Kronos doesn't have the "styles" like the PA3; it's just a different type of instrument. It *does* have all the sounds of the PA3, but your post makes it seem as though you're looking for the PA3-type of instrument. Ultimately your ears (and fingers!) must be the judge of what you want and need, and other peoples opinions have to take a back seat to your own personal experience.

Good luck!
