I originally posted this on another thread but got no response. It may more appropriately should have been posted here as I am interested in the PA 900's vocal processing qualities. Karmanever and I had been referencing Yamaha's VH2.

As a singer I was appalled at the quality of Yamaha's VH2. I am glad to see you use the term unusable because it is almost a joke. I have a Yamaha PSR S 750 because the vocal processing on the 950 which I really wanted for the convenience of onboard harmony while performing, was just unacceptable.
I have heard people with decent voices posting songs which are destroyed by Yamaha's VH2. Most of these people are Tyros4/5 keyboardists. How can a significant keyboard manufacturer continue to use that substandard VH2 in keyboards that cost so much I can't afford to use them. Here's what I want in my harmonizer........

Can I get this kind of sound from the 900's vocal processor? I have heard it has limitations compared to the one that came with the PA 800.
This is my rendition of Micheal Murphy's "Wildfire". I used my outboard Digitech Vocalist 4 set to key for the great harmonies you here in this song. Keyboard is my PSR S750. Mic into Vocalist 4 which is output through stereo mini headphone out to stereo mini AUX In on the keyboard.
I'm going to put out feelers on a used PA 800 but will likely end up with a PA 900 as the price point will likely be the same.

Sorry no one has answered you yet - I was hoping DonM would jump in here because he is a great singer and has used all of these VH on Yamaha and Korg.
After listening to your recording, I imagine every one else is intimidated by your great singing voice - that is a superb recording by the way - thanks for posting it here.
The Pa900 VH is a 3 part only harmonizer - the Pa3x is a full 4 part harmonizer.
I am not a singer and never use the VH on my keyboards, so I can't give you any help on making a choice - sorry.

So I would lose one harmony voice as my Digitech has 4. I appreciate your input even though you don't sing and use the harmonies. The info you provided is a start. Now if only some of the other members would respond.

Well I've had all three--PSRS950, Pa3x and now PA900. I am quite satisfied with the harmonizer in the 900. It does have one fewer voice than the 3x, but I hardly ever use more than one harmony voice anyway.
The VH in the S950 is much improved over all previous Yamahas, and with a little tweaking is maybe usable for live work, if used very sparingly. It pales in comparison to the Korgs though.
I find it easier to quickly change things on the fly with the 900. It has a dedicated VH button that gives instant access to presets.

Sounds like it will work. At first when I rented the PA 800 I wasn't sold on the TC harmony but when I listen to the songs I recorded from that keyboard I hear what I like. I think the $3000 price point on that board made me think that I was better off with my outboard Digitech. By the way that Vocalist 4 unit reads the voice very well so what I've been doing is placing my favourite settings set up in C D E Eb F G A Bb (the keys I sing in) Set up this way I just step through with the up or down pedal to get what I want. This way, I can do without midi and it works great even though not quite as convenient as the way the PA boards bring in midi generated harmony at the push of a footswitch. Got to save up some funds but I think I will eventually end up with a PA 900 and still hang on to my Yamaha.
