I few months ago I picked up a used Kronos X from a pawn shop. There were no factory restore disks with it, so I contacted KORG and the took my info and said they would send them, but they never showed up.

I recently came across the DVD images on the Korg site, so I've been trying to restore using them. I'm having no luck to this point. I burnt the images to DVD with no problems, but then ran into the problem that the external drive that I had didn't work. When I followed the instructions and turned everything off with the drive connected and then turned it back on, it just boots up like normal.

Once it is booted up, I can go into disk mode and see the drive and the image on it, but obviously can't restore from that.

After reading the threads about certain external drives not working, I ordered a Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS from Amazon.

It showed up today, but when I plugged it in and went through the instructions again, the same thing happens. The drive starts spinning, but the Kronos never loads restore mode. And like my original drive, I have no problem seeing it in Disk mode.


At this point, I'm pretty frustrated so I look at the model number on the back of the drive and it says SE-208DB/TSBS. I'm being told by the retailer that either model should work fine. So I'm not sure at this point if the problem is still with the drive or if it my be my disks.


So my immediate questions are:

1. Has anyone successfully restored a Kronos X from the downloaded disk images?

2. Has anyone successfully restored a Kronos X using the DB model Samsung (instead of the AB)

I'm also wondering if there is anywhere to purchase the original disks online, or if anyone knows where in the LA/SFV California area I might be able to take it and have it restored by someone who knows what they're doing.

If nobody can help you with this (which seems unlikely), I can lend you my original disks to try. They're OS1 or 1.5, so you'd just have to upgrade from there to OS 2.1.1 using the files from the Korg site (if my disks worked with your drive).

Btw, would you mind linking the thread that says which drives work well with the Kronos? I need one. Thanks, -Jim

I once had to restore my Kronos from the DVDs. I ordered a Samsung SE-208 and it worked fine. Perhaps there is something wrong with the way you burned the .iso's. Did you use a program to burn the actual disk images to the disks, and not just copy the files? I think that might be your problem.

This is from an older PDF that Korg used to send out with OASYS CDs - it's kinda old, but it's still applicable:

IMPORTANT: Do not simply copy the .iso file onto a CD-ROM. The .iso file is a complete “image” of a CD- ROM, including its directory structure, boot sectors, etc.; copying the file itself will not work.
Below are brief instructions for making a CD-ROM from an .iso file, using the most recent versions of MacOS, Windows. For other operating systems, please see the documentation for your OS and/or CD-burning software.

MacOS 10.4
1. Open the Disk Utility application.
2. In the Images menu, select the Burn command.
A file-open dialog will appear.
3. Select the reauth.iso file.
4. Press the Burn button.
A dialog will prompt you to insert a blank CD.
5. Insert a blank CD into your computer’s CD-R drive.
6. Press the Burn button.
Disk Utility will then burn the image to the CD.


Windows XP/2003
You can burn ISO images using several commercial Windows programs, such as Nero Burning ROM and and Roxio EasyCD Creator. If you have one of these programs, follow the instructions in their documentation.

If you do not already have a commercial program capable of handing ISO images, we recommend the freeware program ISO Recorder, which can be downloaded from the following website:

ISO Recorder uses the built-in Windows XP functions to write ISO images to a CD. As part of its installation, the program is associated with the “.iso” file extension in Windows Explorer.
After installing ISO Recorder:
1. Insert a blank CD into your computer’s CD-R drive.
2. Start Windows Explorer.
3. Locate the reauth.iso file, and right-click on the file name.
Right-clicking opens a contextual menu.
4. Select “Copy image to CD” from the menu.
The ISO Recorder Wizard will open.
5. Follow the ISO Recorder Wizard’s instructions to burn the CD.
ISO Recorder will then burn the image to the CD.

Keep trying different usb cables. I have tens of them at home, but only two of them do the job...

This might sound dumb, but can you burn the download as an image to a usb device and boot from those. I mean have one usb stick for disk 1 and another usb stick for disk 2. Probably not, but thought I would ask.

this page has the load image for the 2.02 as well as the upgrade.

You can make a USB .iso stick LaGranger. Here's a tutorial on it. You might have to format the USB as FAT32 because the Kronos is 32 bit, but I'm not sure. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/file-fold ... so-usb.htm

Stephen was right about the problem having to do with burning the original images. The specific instructions didn't apply directly to Yosemite, but I got it figured out. So thanks!
