First Impressions

1.) The sound quality is amazing!
2.) The presets are really good. I'm really surprised here. Won't be deleting these right away.
3.) It is "heavy". Much heavier than what I was expecting. You have to feel it yourself to understand it. Also the metal is sweet.
4.) It is very different from the EMX-1. I think I´ll need a month or more to master it flawlessly. The thing about the Electribe is that you feel so concentrated and joyful when you use it. And time flies by very quickly, because it´s so nice to have an ALL-in-1-do-it-all- unit. No more looking at a PC-screen (except the export-function of course). I kinda feel like a kid again. I remember when I first got the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis).

Firmware Update

You have to format the SD-card through the Electribe itself before transferring the firmware-file to the SD-card. It won't work if you just format it with the PC and transfer.

Preset Samples

Here's a recording from a preset called "Trap" and the famous "Traveller". Enjoy!

Self-made song

http://www27.zippyshare.com/v/35740162/file.html

I accidentally touched the Touchpad while recording, so a few weird sounds may be heard in the back, lol. Also on the end I accidentally touched a trigger to one of the sounds.

EDIT: I just realized I didn't use a single Master Effect on the song. Sorry for that! I also just realized the meaning of MFX Send! This is genious!

This means I can run the Mastered Effect only on the synth/drum parts that have "MFX Send" activated. Prepare for an epic Re-Done Mix of my first demo!

MIDI

I currently don´t have the option to test MIDI as I don´t have any other gear, currently. It´s only me and my Electribe for now.

The MENU Structure

I was thinking this could be useful for you guys to know. The Menu Structure.

Here´s a link:

http://www59.zippyshare.com/v/46784653/file.html

NEW INFO! It seems they´ve integrated the part-menu in the pattern menu. I didm´t notice this earlier. I´ve taken some photos to prove this:
http://imgur.com/a/Yvy2F

As you can see from menu number 14 to 21, It´s PART related, and not pattern.
This opens up for A LOT MORE editing possibilities on each part.

The Lights and Power Save Mode

The lights beneath the Electribe only light up when a power source is connected. This means that they won't light up when running on batteries. It´s currently impossible to deactivate the bottom lights without having Power Save Mode activated (which kinda dims all lights and lowers the LCD-screen brightness a bit.) I don´t really mind the bottom lights though.

Good One Kilko...
Guess the rest of us will have to wait but we'll have the benefit of your experience by the time we all unbox ours!
Does it require a memory card to run or just to update OS and transfer your creative masterpieces to PC?

Answer: It runs without a memory card, but then you can´t export, record events or do firmware upgrades.

Tom 62

1.) Does the sequencer records velocity when setting steps?

Answer: No

2.) Can I use more than one modulation preset per part simultaneously?

Answer: Per part meaning All sounds together? If so, you can have independent modulation presets to each sound. You can not have several modulations per sound. You can though however have these independent effects per sound:

Oscillator (the patch)
Filter
Modulation
AMP EG
Insert FX

All of these can be customized to that 1 sound, and you have 16 sounds to use all together.

3.) Will the Audio In Thru option (to be found in Global Settings) be memorized?

Answer: As long as you enter Global Settings and turns it to "ON" it memorizes the setting when you load that specific pattern.

4.) How about MIDI channels? Is the MIDI channel identical with the corresponding part number or is it adjustable per part?

Answer: I can´t answer any questions regarding MIDI.

Re-Member

Is there actually a selection of preset sound patches and full drum kits to choose from?
Answer: If you load an empty pattern and start working on your first trigger part, lets say the Kick, if you change the kick, the rest of the trigger parts (snare, hi hats, drums etc,) may be changed to "fit the genre" of the kick. After you´ve changed the snare though, this "genre fit" stops and stays as it was.

If there are preset drum kits, what are some of the types? Any retro TR-808/909/707 style stuff?

Answer: There aren´t exactly specific kits like that, but you´ll recognize the different sounds through the the list of the 408 sounds there is to choose from.

What are some of the editing features, if any, for the Event Recorder? Can you loop an Event file to act as one really long pattern?

Answer: The event file can be as long as you want it to be. It stops recording when you´ve decided it for yourself. There aren´t any editing features of the Event. You can only play it. No option for overlapping live recording, it seems.

Does the Event Recorder have the ability to record notes received from MIDI IN?
For example, is it possible to connect it to a DAW, then using a blank pattern as a template, record MIDI notes from the DAW onto all sixteen parts? I'm looking forward to totally exploiting this feature if possible, haha.

Answer: I don´t know, Im sorry.

Gap-related

Have you tested this using two patterns that have identical Master FX settings? I remember on the MC-808, the reverb and delay effects would carry over switching between patterns, but only if the patterns had the same FX.

Answer: It doesn´t seem to "carry on" the effect, even though I´m using the same Master FX on the modulator.

Robosardine

Hi- could you please put the 'gap between patterns' issue to bed? - I'm assuming you would already have said if there was any- but some confirmation would be most welcome. Cheers!

Answer:There is a "gap" in form of an effect cut-off when changing patterns. I hope they give you the option in a future OS-version to activate so It doesn´t instantly cut off.

1) When you select the AD envelope as a modulation source, does the Speed knob do anything?

Answer: The speed knob adjusts the intensity of the Depth-knob. This means that if I use the effect "LFOTri Pan" from the Modulation Knob, the Depth knob works as a Wet/dry knob and the Speed knob boosts speed it would go from left to right. From Waah-Waah to Wa-wa-wa-w and faster the more you turn the knob.

2) You said that it is actually possible to use multiple modulation presets for one part. Is there a limit on the number of modulation routings per part?

See my answer to Tom 62 (2nd question).

3) Does the lfo go up into audio range?

Answer: What do you mean by this? Please be a little bit more specific :-)

1. According to the parameter guide and the manual there's no option for switching the envelope mode between Attack-Decay and Attack-Release, although the corresponding knob is labeled "Decay/Release".

Answer: You can use both and they´ll work fine with each other. The Decay/Release knob adjusts the sound in general.

2. Various demos showed that at least for the synth parts when you press and hold the pad the note is sustained. So the Amp envelope is the AR one.

Answer: AR One? If the Decay/Release Knob is set to Max (far right), the note will be sustained throughout.

3. The parameter guide shows the AD envelope as a modulation source, and it also can be routed to the Amp.

Answer. Yes, this is correct. And it works great!

Does this mean that both AD and AR envelopes can be used at the same time?

Answer: Yes. Because EG as a Modulation effect is not the same as the EG itself. Therefore you´re actually performing 2 EG´s at once (and if you then turn up the depth-knob, it sounds REALLY SICK!

Answer: Listen here (recording I made to demonstrate)

http://www36.zippyshare.com/v/60466731/file.html

First I had all set to "0" If you understand. Then I changed the EG Int (by turning the EG Int-knob). Then I Turned the Decay/Release Knob. Then I turned Depth-knob from the Modulation-Effect (EG- BPM Pitch). Then I turned the Speed-knob. Then I turned the EG-Int-knob again to see the overall effect at the end.

Can you route the AR envelope to the Amp using the "Amp EG" button and then route the AD envelope to the Amp via the Modulation section? So that effectively the superposition of two envelopes gives you an ADSR.

Answer: Yes: As you heard you kinda get 2 Envelopes at once :-)

Because if this is the case, I’m ordering this box from Japan right away
Answer: Seems you have to, now ;-)

Roblabs

thanks for all of these updates and taking the time to answer our questions, kilko, you're a cool dude for that!

I have a question about the midi parts. You said there is only one MIDI channel to select in the Global settings. Does this mean that if you connect a keyboard to the electribe's midi in, it will only transmit to whatever part is active? But what happens then when you switch to another function like PART MUTE where you can mute parts on and off?

Answer: I can´t answer any MIDI-questions as I don´t have any other gear atm. I only have the Electribe 2. I´m sorry for that. Please donate me a 707 ;-)

Olivander 12

How does the event recorder work?

Answer: The Event Recorder can record when a pattern is playing (with live changes) and save it all to 1 file. You simply push the "STOP-button" when you´re satisfied with the song. Then it´s saved. You have to have an SD-card to use the Event Recorder. You cannot edit event recordings. You can only record event and play event.

BingKingBo

Kilko, thx for all of these updates!

Q1: can it sequence with external gear on 16 MIDI channels?

Answer: I can´t answer any MIDI-questions as I don´t have any other gear atm. I only have the Electribe 2. I´m sorry for that. Please donate me a 707 ;-)

Q2: if i don't really like the lights beneath the Electribe2, can i switch it off except running on batteries?

Answer: If you activate the Power Save mode, they will be switched off.

Hoolak

Can you make the electribe sound like a TB-303? I want to hear it do acid! So jealous of you.

Answer: Just made this...: http://www45.zippyshare.com/v/59921237/file.html

ACIIIID!

Buska

1 question,
Can you confirm that the highest quantize resolution is 32?

Answer: Yes. It is 16, 32, 8 Tri, 16 Tri,

Can you turn off quantize off?

Answer: No. Or I haven´t managed to find that setting, at least.

If you have a drum track with reverb on channel1 then the next pattern it's on channel 2 and channel one is blank, does it still cut off the effect?

Answer: Yes.

Jimmy Fontana

Hey Kilko, more questions - Does the song data, like the demo you just recorded, get saved as wav (one/individual tracks?) or as some sort of internal performance midi data? If it's the second case, can it be overwritten, like record more knob movements over a recorded song? Thanks.

Answer: I recorded through the line-outs to my USB-soundcard which is connected to my laptop.

The event recorder saves recordings to really small files. I guess it´s "performance midi data".

SMK

I understand that there is a Gate Arpeggiator feature in the new new Tribe.

In the Kaossilator Pro the Gate Arpeggiator has 2 specific perpetrators; Gate Time which really functions as a "wet to dry" mix of the legato effect and Gate Speed which gave specific ranges speed where the sound is heard from a 1/4 note to 1/8 note intervals.

My questions regarding the Electribes Gate Arpeggiator is there are way to change the speed of the legato ranging from "no legato" to 1/4 to 1/8 intervals?

Answer: Listen here:

http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/95508593/file.html

Is there a "wet / dry" setting the controls the impact to the sound of the Gate Areggiator?

Answer: Yeah, but only through the menu. Here you can change the value from 1 up to 50, but 8 is probably the max you´ll use.

But I was wondering if you could do a demo and test to see if you can have the same sound, on more than one part.

Answer: Listen here: http://www12.zippyshare.com/v/82896096/file.html

I´m adding 1 more layer of the same sound after every loop.

And for anther experiment...you can you set audio in to be a sound in more than one part. Lets say I want that audio in oscillator in all 16 parts but obviously with different effects. Can you try that experiment for us? I knwo it won't make much sense to you, but please give it a try.

Answer: I think I understand what you mean, but the Input level from the Audio In is all over the Master Volume and I can´t seem to get any sound from the Triggered sound-part when the Oscillator is set to "Audio In", which it should be

There. Finally done with all your questions :-)
I actually learned a lot myself just from your questions :-) Thank You :p

Now I can relax with my Electribe... :P (5005 Views!)[/b]

How does the new Tribe smell? Better than a brand new Mac right after the unboxing?

OK, I'll start with a few more seriously questions:

1.) Does the sequencer records velocity when setting steps?
2.) Can I use more than one modulation preset per part simultaneously?
3.) Will the Audio In Thru option (to be found in Global Settings) be memorized?
4.) How about MIDI channels? Is the MIDI channel identical with the corresponding part number or is it adjustable per part?

Thank you in advance.

I don't have my unit yet, but I have a few answers. There are no "patches" and no "kits" like you think of them - there are only patterns. Patterns are either factory (populated with pattern and part data) or INIT (blank).

Patterns have up to 16 parts - every part is either a drum hit, or a synth wave, or a PCM tone. Everything is mix and match.

If you want the whole top row of part pads to be a drum kit, you assign those pads to the individual kit sounds you want. Yes, there are traditional 808 and 909 and other analog drum sounds - at least the PCM names suggest this (nine snare, nine kick, etc). You can also do choke groups for open and closed hats.

So when you fire up an INIT pattern to get started, you'll be assigning whatever you want to the parts. Build an 808 kit, build a hybrid, build a totally random collection of drum elements. Or synthsize your own analog-style drums from the waves, noise, filter, envelopes, etc.

You can also copy sounds you like from a factory pattern to your INIT.

1) When you select the AD envelope as a modulation source, does the Speed knob do anything?

2) You said that it is actually possible to use multiple modulation presets for one part. Is there a limit on the number of modulation routings per part?

This is something I'm curious about as well. From what I read about the older Electribes, even though the machines operated on a single Global MIDI channel, each individual Part had it's own specific MIDI channel. It would be great if you can confirm that each of the sixteen Parts send and receive MIDI IN and MIDI OUT on different channels using the ports on the back of the machine.

by roblabs
Yes that's correct with the older tribes. (at least I can confirm that for the EA, ES, ER. Never used the X series so don't know about those). On the EA-1, for example, you could set the midi channel for part 1 and 2 individually. You could even put them on the same channel if you wanted. It would be cool if you had this flexibility on the new one.
